Bounding the Hands of Jesus

by Katy Foster
12/21/2016 / Poetry

"And when they had bound Him,..." Matthew 27:2

Given the rope and orders to bound the Man
I approach the Authority, and He held out His hands.
I glance up at Him and met His eyes;
Though He weak and I great, He sees my heart cry.
Resisting to reveal myself a lost wretch,
I take cover, eyes down at His hands, outstretched.
Engaging my task, a learned verse flood's my face
Like an angel's breath landing, knowing its place.
"For all those things My hand has made..."
Are these Your hands God, that I degrade?
I try not to touch His hands, fingers, not His skin,
Because even a brush sends a tremble within.
Also, I know if our hands are too close,
I will grasp them, and clench them, and I won't let go.
Now I'm trembling. I'm weak, but His hands I will bound.
And He stands there and faces me, never making a sound.
I wish He would speak to me, and I pull the knot tight.
My task here is done; I regroup my might.
Yet, a hunger sends my eyes to His hands in awe.
What sickness, what disease, dear God, empowers withdraw?
If I grasp my hand in His palm, no delay,
I imagine feeling His fingers on my hand overlay.
Covering my filth, my pride, my sin.
Floods of healing and forgiving, giving me life again.
Yet I stand in position, this authority I've earned.
This poor Man's glory -- I resist my heart's yearn.
Wait, I must take His hand, I step forward, with fear.
Yet He is pushed to walk toward His death very near.
I cannot see His hands as He walks away.
A fool I am! Imprisoned from truth, I now stay.
The overwhelming thoughts of His hands, leave me, please!
A cold heart I'll retort to, and give the pain ease.
The Creator of all that exist still stands.
And I, a lame slave, bounded his hands.
