Planting, Watering and Harvesting

by ope rowland

In reaching out to lives, our contributions could form any or a mix of planting, watering and harvesting. These are the basic stages for every complete planting season and cycle.

The eagerness and expectation of everyone involved is usually the harvest part but this would not happen without the preceding planting and watering. Even when it looks like a quick result was experienced, planting and watering occurred though it might not be consciously noticed.

As there are crops that are ready to be harvested after decades, there are those that are ready after years, and those that are ready after months not forgetting those that are ready after weeks. Every plant has its own peculiar duration from the planting to the harvest. So if invited or commissioned to such a field, it is not necessarily with the intent to harvest though we approach with that high expectation. The owner might be commissioning us to plant fresh seeds or water what others or we have already sowed in times past.

God’s word communicated in whatever form could act as a seed in the life of the recipient. It could be a seed of salvation, healing, deliverance, prosperity, … or a combination of sort. That word is incorruptible and has the potential to fulfill its mandate but must be properly engrafted in a soil and watered to grow. The seeds you see around have the potential to reproduce but remain seeds until they are engrafted and nurtured.

You are in contact with some fields (lives) to plant seeds.  However, a process is needed to complete the cycle. This process might and might not involve you.

God’s word could also act as water.  Being opportune to operate in a field might be to water and water the already planted seed.  You might be aware and you might not be aware of the planting already done in that field. However, your faithfulness in communicating that eternal word convert the word to a watering agent in that field though the same word could act as a seed or harvesting agent in another field.

Even when it seems that effort is not making any change, it is actually doing so. You cannot isolate which of the rain on a field actually cause the growth.  The growth of a plant is due to the summation of all the watering received. So do not be discouraged, your effort is adding the change process going on.

The effort of a farmer on the field could also yield harvest. However, a harvest was only possible because a planting and watering had earlier being done and the plant is ripe for harvest. A harvest done before the cycle is completed would not be useful for the owner and make a waste of all the effort of the planter and waters. Therefore, a faithful communication of God’s word could bring about a harvest once the cycle is completed.

The harvesting part excites many often because it is the most celebrated part of the work. However, though celebrated, the harvester does not get all the reward. The owner of the field is fair, in fact very fair. He is not carried away by the joy of the harvest, he is conscious of the labor of the previous laborers. So he reward all according to the portion he has commissioned them to do in that field. The planter gets his reward for planting and the waterers get their reward for watering.

We all desire and pray for fields ready for harvesting but the reality are without planting and watering there could be no harvest. Without a planter and the waters, there is no need for a harvester. If you are privileged to be a harvester in a field (life) celebrate God, and acknowledge and appreciate God for the lives of those who had planted and watered that same field before you.

God’s ways are mysterious! He could bring you to harvest the same field where you had planted or watered. He could also make you experience that joy of harvesting in another field you had not previously labored. There are also some God has made specialist in planting, watering or harvest. Irrespective of which, celebrate the assigned permanent and temporary role God has given you by being faithful in it.

Further Meditation:

  1 Corinthians 3:8

The one who plants and the one who waters work as a team with the same purpose. Yet they will be rewarded individually, according to their own hard work. (NLT)

 John 4:35-38

Do you think the work of harvesting will not begin until the summer ends four months from now? Look around you! Vast fields are ripening all around us and are ready now for the harvest. The harvesters are paid good wages, and the fruit they harvest is people brought to eternal life. What joy awaits both the planter and the harvester alike! You know the saying, One person plants and someone else harvests.' And it's true. I sent you to harvest where you didn't plant; others had already done the work, and you will gather the harvest." (NLT)

 Isaiah 55:11

…It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it. (NLT)
