Priceless

Are you frustrated and feel empty with your life and way of living?

Are you filled with anxiety and feel there are no answers out there? You have tried the self-help gurus, and you are still empty with a gnawing feeling that there really are no answers out there.

Could you be right! There are no answers "out there". Is it possible you are looking in the wrong place? If I am looking in the wrong place --- where should I be looking? The answer to that question may be closer than you think.

We sometimes look to celebrities, actors, wealthy successful people and even church leaders to give us an answer.

What is the priceless thing we are looking for?

The answer to that question is love.

You might say, "I have been married 2, 3 or more times and I can tell you that love is not the answer".

Sometimes we say, "I have looked to very wealthy people for answers and found that wealth cannot buy love". You might say, "I find that hard to believe".

You might look to entertainment celebrities with all the glitter, glamour and excitement and feel that life must certainly be satisfying. You find that they rarely have satisfying marriages that last very long. Many resort to pills to sleep, deal with the tension or just dull the feeling of emptiness.

Before we go any farther, it might be wise to define what we are searching for --- love.

The Webster dictionary defines love as --- "a deep tender feeling of affection or attachment or devotion to a person or persons ---. a feeling of brotherhood and love toward other people".

The Bible, our inerrant source of truth, refers to agape, phileo and storge love.

Love (agape) is the highest characteristic of God, the one attribute in which all others blend. Agape love is not just a feeling but, if sincere, results in a positive action. Agape love is something we decide to do and is not just a passing thought. We may not like what we are called to do, but we do it anyway.

Phileo love refers to an affectionate, warm and tender platonic love. It makes you desire friendship with someone. It is a committed and chosen love. We can agape love our enemies but we cannot phileo love them.

Storge love refers to the love and affection of parents for their children, if the parents have a good relationship. Storge love may exist between brother, sister, and other members of a loving, God-fearing family.

The word love is sometimes used very loosely. We say, "I love iced cream, or I love to sing or dance --- I love movies". We use this powerful word very casually in our society today. We might try using the word enjoy, in the place of love, thus showing proper respect for the very essence of God.

Now that we know the meaning and characteristics of the powerful word love, we can begin the discussion of how we can use it in the day-to-day, secular world in which we live.                        We can begin with our families. Our society is filled with the broken wreckage of families that once were closely knitted and loving. How did they get that way? What is missing, or is that just the way it is these days? The answer society has for us is pills, alcohol, pseudo psychology and all kinds of other distractions. The answer is not "out there". Society cannot help us, the government cannot help us and unfortunately, many of our churches today cannot help us either.   Let us look at the one source of truth and love that will never fail us --- The Holy Bible.           Let us start with our quiet time with our Lord. Is it an important part of our life daily, or have we drifted slowly away because of the many other distractions that are demanding our time?             How can God speak to us, guide us in our lives daily, and bless us with His love if we have no time for Him. As we study scripture and practice our quiet time with God, He will direct our path. He will reveal the special gifts with which we have been endowed and how to use them to bless others. We are unique persons and have to be careful not to compare ourselves and our gifts to other people. We can become jealous of others whose gifts may be more obvious. The enemy is always ready to discourage us and make us feel inferior. We can fight this feeling by immediately thanking and praising our Lord for all the blessings, we receive every day, for the support of our personal and church families.

Let us now examine our church lives. Do we attend regularly or just once in awhile? Are we distracted by worldly concerns like sports, hobbies, politics and, sometimes, simple laziness. I am sure there are many others. Are we applying our unique gifts effectively, or simply thinking about it. Sometimes we think about it until we become interested in another project to think about.

Some of us may simply choose the path of indifference. Cares of this world are choking out any sensitivity to the agonies of others. We may feel, "Life is good. If they made better choices in life they would not be in the mess they are in". Be very careful if you feel that way. It is said, "Pride goes before the fall. The day may come when you realize that all that glitter and glamour of the world is simply chrome and plastic, promise without fulfillment. You will begin to feel the emptiness inside indicating the decay of your soul.

The question now is --- what are you going to do with the unique gifted you? We live on the knife-edge of now! None of us is guaranteed that we have another day in our lives. You say, "I am young and I will worry about it later. Are you sure? You may not even have tonight.

Act now! Turn to our Lord Jesus and enjoy the precious, love-filled life He has prepared for you. This may be your last chance!

As a senior citizen, I am dedicated to serving the Lord through sharing my experiences and insights with other believers. My primary focus is upon being an disciple of Jesus and, in being one, I can help others to find their spiritual way also.
