Happy Holidays!

by Alan Allegra
2/15/2017 / Holidays

I love my job! I review online lessons for an international Christian homeschool academy, covering every scholastic subject, for all ages from Pre-k through high school. I must admit, I have learned a lot at my advanced age from reading about everything from “Counting to Ten” to “Mapping the Journey of Ibn Battuta.”

I recently reviewed a series on American holidays. As I journeyed through the series, I realized that most American holidays, besides affording citizens a day off work or school, commemorate historical events and, truthfully, dead people.

There is one holiday—the biggest on our calendar—that celebrates a person who still lives, no matter what year it is observed. His birth predates those of Washington and Lincoln by centuries, and his assassination predates Martin Luther King’s by over 1900 years. He is the reason for the season of Christmas, the subject of Thanksgiving, the one on whose book the presidents swear. His work was carried on by St. Patrick, his word proclaimed by Martin Luther and Martin Luther King. He gave mankind their first Day of Labor in an eastern garden.

The biggest holiday belongs to the biggest person in history, the Lord of history, Jesus Christ. His birth is proclaimed at Christmas, and his death is celebrated on Good Friday. For others who own a holiday, that ends it. However, there is one more holiday to consider: Easter, what Christians call, “Resurrection Day”!

That day sets Jesus apart from all other holiday namesakes. It’s the day we celebrate his walk out of the tomb after three days of interment. Unlike the past presidents, war veterans, and Halloween spooks, Jesus Christ is alive! “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).

Because he is alive, “[H]e is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

Because Jesus is alive, we have a living hope in this dying world: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3).

Because Christ is alive, we have a trustworthy guide to life here and hereafter, the Bible: “For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us” (2 Corinthians 1:20, KJV).

If you’re wondering where he’s been all these years, Jesus is currently in heaven awaiting God the Father’s command to return to set up the Kingdom of God on earth and judge or reward every person (Luke 19:11–27).

With all that in mind, the hope we have in a living Lord and Savior and King and Head of the Church makes every day a holiday celebration!
