The Breakfast of Champions 1 - Foresight

I wonder about cartoons today.  They just don’t do it for me like the ones we watched when I was a kid.  One of my favorite childhood heroes was none other than Popeye the Sailor Man.  He got into a lot of scrapes mainly against his arch enemy Brutus (called Bluto in the earlier days).  Popeye was an average size guy with enormous forearms while Brutus was a giant of a man.  He was big and he was strong.  Most of the time Popeye would face his enemy fearlessly only succeeding in getting beat badly until that special moment arrived.  I’ve often wondered why he waited so long but then if he hadn’t there wouldn’t have been much of an episode.

He would take all he could take and then he would say, “That’s all I can stands; I can’t stands no more!”  He’d reach in his shirt and pull out an enormous can of spinach, get the can opened and pour the entire contents in his mouth.  Suddenly he would be filled with strength and make mince meat out of Brutus.

Although as a child I never liked the taste of spinach, because Popeye ate it I would not hesitate.  I’d pick it up out of my plate, hold my head in the air and suck it down just like Popeye.  I’m sure that cartoon was invented by a parent who was trying to figure out a way to make their kids like spinach.  I don’t know if it worked for them but it certainly made a believer out of me!  Sometimes it takes the unusual to help us to believe

In Numbers 14:6-9 we read the account of the twelve spies returning from the land of Canaan.  They were sent there by Moses to bring back a report to the people about the land they were getting ready to take over.  Ten of the spies had brought back a bad report.  They readily agreed that the land was a rich land.  But they had witnessed the mighty armies of the people of the land.  They had even seen giants there.  They told the people that they were not strong enough to take the land.

But Joshua and Caleb gave very different reports.  They told the people that they could take the land.  They talked about how the land indeed flowed with milk and honey representative of plenty.  But they also said that the giants of the land would be food for them.  They didn’t mean that they were going to become cannibals and eat the people who inhabited the land but that by defeating them it would prove to be fuel for their relationship with God.  They were referring to the Breakfast of Champions.

The first of five things we need to know and master in conquering our own giants of persecution, defeat, and discouragement is to possess foresight.  The land of Canaan was given by God to the Children of Israel.  It was theirs; all they had to do was go forward in obedience to God and take it.  Sure it wasn’t going to be easy but they had to know that God would be with them each step of the way.

After salvation so many Christians feel that they have to live a miserable, poor and forsaken life.  But God has promised us a rich life.  That may not necessarily mean that we’ll be rolling in money but it does mean that we can learn to be satisfied and know that God is going to provide what is best for us.  They had the promise of God that the land was theirs, and the will of God – He wanted them there.  All they had to do was to believe the promise and move forward at His direction.  It is the same for us.  We can be victorious in the face of defeat, disaster and trial.  We can face our giants.  All we’ve got to do is to eat the breakfast of champions.
