Mighty Oaks
by PamFord Davis
4/17/2017 / Devotionals

What does springtime mean to you?

To most, it’s the welcome arrival of warmer temperatures, greenery and flowers in blooms. Showers and thunderstorms are common. Sadly, tornadoes frequently make their presence and power known. These storms can be deadly with power to destroy anything in their path.

The first things to topple are trees.

Tree damage from tornado winds can be as widespread as that from hurricanes. I witnessed the destruction of Hurricane Opal in the Northwest Florida Panhandle. Trees were broken and tossed around like drinking straws. Pine trees fell like dominoes and mighty oaks were up-rooted, revealing a massive root system formed over decades, even centuries.

Storms show no partiality. Both oak trees that grace the yards of the affluent and those in lawns of the poor are fallen. Economic status has no effect.

Am I a tree firmly planted by the Lord, as a mighty oak gracing the lives of those I meet?  Do I have a strong root system?

“And they will be called righteous trees, planted by the Lord to glorify Him (Isaiah 61:3b HCSB).”

When rooted in God's word, I will bring glory to His name.

“Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers (Psalm 1:2-3 (HCSB)."
