What Can I Do?

by Steve Countryman

Matthew 14:15-16 15As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” 16 Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.”

Matthew 8:23-27 23Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. 24 Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. 25 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

The more I think about these passages the more I find them interesting. Notice what Jesus said… “You give them something to eat” and “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Now knowing who Jesus is why would He say such things? I believe it is because Jesus knew what His disciples had available to them. Their spiritual capabilities were so much more than they were even aware of. Jesus said these things to His disciples who WERE NOT yet filled with “the Comforter” the Holy Spirit.

It is the difference of “seeing” in the natural verses “seeing” in the supernatural. Limiting yourself by what you see in the natural will always keep you from stepping out in faith. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Picturing what is possible in the supernatural opens up limitless possibilities. “Speak those things that are not as if they were.” Are you filled?

“What can I do?” Do you know who you are in Christ? Do you know who Christ is in you? Do you know that you have been adopted into the royal family of Heaven? Do you know that you were chosen by God for this time and place before time began? Do you know that you have been empowered by the Holy Spirit, infused with authority, made a priest on earth, clothed in righteousness, given victory over the evil one, gifted with all spiritual blessings and God has made your enemies your footstool?

As Christians we are given the valuable tool of prayer. It is the single most important communication device ever conceived by God for us to use daily. It is also the most ignored, forgotten about and abused tool that we have. It is too often used as “the tool of last resort”. When ALL else fails “I guess I’ll pray about it”. Considering that prayer is what invokes God’s blessings and encourages the moving of the Holy Spirit, shouldn’t it be the very first thing we Christians do? It may be the “least” we can do but it is also the best thing we can do!

Prayer is putting your faith into action. How can you pray without faith? Just listen to what you are praying. If you are praying God’s will and Word be done shouldn’t you expect it to be done? Mark 11:22-25 22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.

“What can I do?” Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Now kick it up a notch… I WILL do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Don’t stop now… I DO all things through Christ who strengthens me! Having the God of the I’MPOSSIBLE in you what CAN’T you do?
