A Pastor and His Wife Receive a Surprise During Fourth of July Worship Service

Pastor David and his wife, Deloris, were proud citizens of the United States of America.

Both Pastor David and Deloris had served in the military. Pastor David had spent four years in the Army, while Deloris was a four-year veteran of the Navy.

The pastor and his wife had both recorded albums of patriotic Christian music. A popular singing duo in their local community, members of the congregation had come to love the couple’s regular music ministry.

The couple planned to sing “God Bless America” during the morning worship service on July 2, 2017. Before the they sang, the pastor declared, “Not only do we want to honor our American heritage and those who have fought, bled and died to keep America free, we also want to honor and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, who died on Calvary’s Cross to free us from sin!”

“That’s right,” Deloris agreed. “We also want to honor our son, Dean, who plans to join the Air Force after he graduates from high school.”

As a special memento of the service, Daniele provided hand-sewn replicas of America’s first flag. Danielle, a member of the church for 20 years, was always looking for ways to use her sewing talent to show her love for the Lord and her respect for America’s military heroes.

“I like to think of myself as a patriotic American and also a grateful citizen of God’s kingdom,” Danielle frequently commented to her friends.

In addition to “God Bless America,” Pastor David and Deloris decided to sing “The Star Bangled Banner.” The couple received a standing ovation from the congregation at the conclusion of the second song.

Pastor David invited Dean to join him and Deloris on the platform to sing again the first verse of “God Bless America.” Dean had a beautiful voice and was planning a career as a musician after he completed his military service.

“Thanks, mom and dad, for this opportunity to sing with you,” David said. “I’ll always remember this special time.”

“You’re welcome, Dean,” said Pastor David. “This will provide special memories for your mom and me, too.”

Pastor David and Deloris were happy that Dean wanted to serve in the Air Force, but were surprised when he announced, “I’ve decided to serve in the military as a career. I want to be a chaplain and serve the Lord Jesus in that capacity!”

Dean told his parents and the congregation, “I’m glad to be an American, but I’m even more glad to be a citizen of heaven. I’m only a citizen of America while I’m living in this world, but I’ll be a citizen of heaven forever!”
