A BANQUET FOR REVEVNGE

by Olawale Ogunsola

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,

but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”   1Corinthians 1:18 NKJV.

Those  believers who see the old Testament books as full of faults or mistakes are missing many good things. One of them is the beauty of the New Testament lived by certain characters in the old Testament of the Holy Bible. This group of Believers have forgotten that the Scriptures were written by those inspired by the Holy Spirit of God.

One of the characters who demonstrated the instructions contained in New Testament in the Old was Queen Esther Ahasuerus.

“How did she do this”?, you may ask?

The instructions of Jesus Christ to His folowers go thus,

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless

those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use

     you.

‘But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing

in return:and your reward will be great…”   Luke 6:27,35. NKJV

This is contained in the New Testament; do you know there is an equivalent verse in the Old Testament?   Proverbs 25:21 reads,

“If your enemy is hungry, give him

      bread to eat,

And if he is thirsty, give him water

     to drink,

For so you will heap coal of fire

     on his head,

And the Lord will reward you.”

This was grossly demonstrated by Queen Esther.

During the reign of King Ahasuerus, a powerful enemy rose to destroy the people of God, the Jews, who were in that kingdom. This was King Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia, (Esther 1:1b) .This enemy of God’s people really perfected his plan very well. Haman paid the necessary money into the King’s treasury to ensure that the plan to elimante all Jews came to pass. Little knowing that Queen Esther was a Jewish woman.

In that crucial time, Queen Esther rose to help her people. When she went in to the King to save her people, her response to the King’s question was astonishing.

The King’s question was,

“What do you wish, Queen Esther? What is your request?

it shall be given to  you-up to half the kingdom!” Esther 5:3.

A common response would be to ask for the death of God’s enemy, Haman. This was not the case with Queen Esther. Her reply was,

“If it pleased the King, let the King and Haman come today to

the banquet that I have prepared for him.”   Vesre 4.

A casual glance at the King’s question and his Queen’s answer may portray the latter as an unserious soul. However, a careful examination brings out the best way to pay back an enemy in his own coins. It is also an evidence that she loved to obey the instructions of God of Israel.

These question and answer were repeated in Esther 5 verse 6-8. The Queen did not invite new persons. Her guests at the banquet were the King and the enemy of God’s people, Haman. She entertained the one who had the aurhority over the land the person to be judged to the same table to eat her meal. This was done for two different reasons:

One: to make the heart of the King joyful as her husband and to reinforce his love for her “tasty fingers”.

Two: To “Leap coals of fire on Haman’s head” by turning the tide against him. She efficiently achieved her two-fold goals at the same banquet.

At the right time when the iron of revenge was very hot, Queen Esther struck. The King’s question remained,

“What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request up to half the Kingdom? It shall be done!”   Esther 7:2.

Queen Esther’s answer was modified to bring her pursuit to a logical conclusion. She said,

“If I found favor in your sight, o King, and if it pleases the King,

let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my

       request.

For we have been sold, my people and I, to be destroyed, to

be killed, and to be annihilated…

The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman.”    Esther 7:3-4,6.

     What was the final outcome?

King Ahasuerus commanded Haman to be hanged together with his ten sons. Haman replaced Mordecai who was hated by him. This hatred spread to the other Jews. He was hanged on the gallow he prepared for Mordecai. That is the irony of life!

What apppeared to be foolishness in Queen Esther later turned into wisdom.

Have you identified any known adversary? Do him good. He have done you evil but do good to him. You will reap what you sow and he what he sowed. Doing good means you heap coals of fire on him. You will then laugh last.

Therefore, do not hesitate to give food to your hungry adversary. Prepare a Banquet of Revenge for your enemy by meeting his needs sincerely and faithfully.

Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord.
