A RICH FOOL

by Olawale Ogunsola
8/29/2017 / Christian Living

“Rich’ and “Fool” are two words that are strange bedmates. Do you ask “why”? To be rich is the desire of many people. To be rich has certain benefits that make people to struggle to become rich. It is a state that many people covet, even sometimes at all costs.

On the other hand, a fool is a word that no one admires. There have been people who have been so described and could not sleep for days. It is an “insulting” word. Everyone avoids being called a fool. Nothing is fascinating in the life of a fool, his end is not a thing to be desired.

Why then is the strange combination of the words in one person?

Treasures in people are contained in various parts of their body. The right deployment of such treasures, if you like call it “Gift”, will surely attract riches. Irrespective of a man’s weakness elsewhere, these words are true,

“He who has a slack hand becomes

       Poor,

But the hand of the diligent makes

Rich.”     Proverbs 10:4. New King James Version (NKJV)

This means that whoever diligently deploys his God-given treasure, gift or talent will be surely made rich. It is a law that never fails.

However, acquiring wealth or riches is one thing, retaining it and doing so for a long time, even to leave them for the next generation is an entirely different thing.

That is where foolishness can ruin everything a fool has acquired. Now let us examine briefly few of those things, among others, that constitute foolishness on the part of the rich man:

  1. “The rich man’s wealth is his strong

    City,

And like a high wall in his own

     Esteem.”    Proverbs 18:11. NKJV.

It is an easy thing for the rich man to feel safe and secure in the city of his wealth and in the high wall he has built for himself.

Instead of this, Psalm 127:1 declares,

“Unless the Lord builds the house,

They labor in vain who build it.

Unless the Lord guards the city,

The workman stays awake in vain.”

The rich man should know that the Lord should be his security Guard 24/7.

  1. “But ruthless men retain riches.” Proverbs 11:16b.

The undoing of every rich fool is to be in their city of wealth. They prefer to create a flood of riches because there is no channel through which it can flow to other people.

Whereas, “there is one who scatters, yet

                    Increase more,

And there is one who withholds

                     More than is right

But it leads to poverty.”   Proverbs 11:24.

It is seer foolishness to make a dam of the wealth without an outlet to flow out.

  1. “Riches do not profit in the day of

     Wrath,

But righteousness delivers from

     Death.”    Proverbs 11:4. NKJV.

This is clear enough. When the Lord becomes wrathful on the rich man, his riches cannot rescue him. Riches cannot help when death calls. The wealth of Nabal became powerless when he was killed, 1 Sam 25:2-3, 38.

There is limit to what riches can do.

  1. “He who trusts in his riches will fall,

But the righteous will flourish like foliage.”    Proverbs 11:28.

It is a common vice among the rich to trust in their possessions. They are confident that their tongue walks through the earth and by so doing, there is nothing they cannot do. It is seer foolishness! God reigns in the affairs of men.

It is better to trust in God, their Maker rather than what He gave them; that is’ riches.

  1. “The way of the fool is right in his own eyes.

Do not be wise in your own eyes

Fear the Lord and depart from evil.”     Proverbs 3:7;12:15.

Because of his wealth, a rich fool is the wisest person in the world. He is not ready to welcome any wise counsel from any quarter. This is against the verse quoted earlier. He is self-sufficient. He is a man, no one can talk to. He will not listen.

  1. “I, my, me, mine” are the dominant words of a rich fool. That is selfishness. They are Satan’s words. Read the Book of Isaiah 14:12-15.

These were used by Nabal, the husband of Abigail in 1Samuel 25:11.

He was later killed and returned to his Maker.

What could his wealth do to rescue him? Nothing.

  1. “18 Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and which I have shown myself wise under the sun.” Ecclesiastes 2:

These are the declarations of King Solomon in the evening of his life. He was the wisest king of his days; that was why he could bring these words to records.

However, this is not in the mind of a rich fool. He has no time at all to think on such words as these. It is dangerous!

Are you one of the rich fools? Have a re-think. Amend your ways. Re-assess your thoughts, words and deeds. Repent and put on a new leave today

Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
