Work Habits

by PamFord Davis
10/02/2017 / Devotionals

I mowed our front lawn early this morning; the push mower chore is not normally in my routine. My husband Norm handles it. He’s been extra busy so I took it upon myself to be a pinch hitter. There was a time when I mowed a big lawn every week. We were then living in Goodwater, AL.

Norm planted large vegetable gardens on the property, two in the back yard and two in a side yard. It was my responsibility to cut the rest of the lawn with our push mower and it was no easy task. There were pine trees to mow around and a steep hill to master. I started working shortly after daybreak.

I knew it was best to work before it got hot outside. I didn’t know I was being watched…

Our house was located directly across from a local industrial plant; a man in management there observed my work habits. I learned later that he used me as an example; I assume he was trying to increase productivity in his employees.

People are quick to notice our life choices.

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.

‘You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on a lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:13-16 HCSB).”
