Priorities

Jesus words cut to the quick.

The religious leaders of the day were materialistic and full of pride. Jesus’ message set them straight.

“No household slave can be the slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You can’t be slaves to both God and money.’

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, were listening to all these things and scoffing at Him. And He told them: ‘You are the ones who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly admired by people is revolting in God’s sight (Luke 16:13-15 HCSB).”

Though the people admired the Pharisees; Jesus rebuked them. He often spoke to His followers about money and possessions.

“Don’t collect for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But collect for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves don’t break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:19-21 HCSB).

In contrast to the Pharisees, a poor widow’s priorities were admirable.“Sitting across from the temple treasury, He watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. And a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning His disciples, He said to them, ‘I assure you: This poor widow has put in more than all those giving to the temple treasury. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she possessed—all she had to live on (Mark 12:41-44 HCSB).”
