Bread and Water

by PamFord Davis
10/20/2017 / Devotionals

Eating brings pleasure; I want (nearly demand) a change of menu. I don’t experiment often with new foods; I just desire variety in foods I enjoy. My husband Norm has been a vegetarian since age twelve (after viewing meat under a microscope in his science class). A tomato and cheese sandwich with potato chips is one of his favorite meals. He’s pleased as punch if lettuce, onions and pickles are added. What do prisoners eat?

I’m not sure what their menus consist of today; there was a time when some existed on bread and water. Meditate on words by the Psalmist.

“Restore us, God;
look on us with favor,
and we will be saved.

Lord God of Hosts,
how long will You be angry
with Your people’s prayers?
You fed them the bread of tears
and gave them a full measure
of tears to drink (Psalm 80:3-5 HCSB).”

Bread, (once considered the staff of life) was given by the LORD to His children. It was no ordinary bread; the main ingredient was tears. What did He give them to wash it down with? Tears; the LORD gave them tears instead of water.

Lest I forget, the LORD disciplines those that He loves.

“And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons:

My son, do not take the Lord’s discipline lightly
or faint when you are reproved by Him,
for the Lord disciplines the one He loves
and punishes every son He receives.

Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline (Hebrews 12:5-7 HCSB)?”
