Having Done All

by Omolara E. Gbadamosi

There was a time when I used to think the likes of Ray Charles were the lucky few who did not get entangled in the Hollywood roller coaster, ‘All American Dream life’ of drugs and alcohol until I watched his movie, ‘Ray’. I can’t say if I wanted to play naïve all this while or not but then I realized he reigned in the same era with the likes of Elvis Presley, Monroe, the younger Freddie Mercury and so forth. Could you blame me? The first time I ever saw Ray was in the 1984 ‘All Stars’ music video, ‘We are the World’. It was a family oriented video and he didn’t look one bit like others with all their jerry curls and sleazy looks. He struck me as a decent, respectable man and by his appearance, I ‘assumed’ his youth was a sheltered one.

More so, the movie reminded me of how your background is not and should never be an excuse not to rise and succeed. That man lived above his circumstances! Poverty, blindness and loneliness limited him but they couldn’t hold him down. Ray broke out of the mold. His personality coupled with his outlook towards life did not allow people around him to dwell on his limitations. He lived life to the fullest and so have others before and after him. A truly inspiring story I must say and a lot to learn from (most especially the ‘should nots’). Indeed, no one has any reason to remain in his pity party world. Everyone is entitled to a good life. It’s all in the mindset.

Surely, the Oprah Winfreys and the Ray Charles of our world have continued to steer up hope in others which is really good because people need to be motivated to win. However, in spite of everybody’s longing for a life of success, power and fame, there remains an increasing heart-felt cry of men even after success is achieved.

The lips of celebrities and people in general continue to echo that desperate need…

“I just want to be happy!”

This statement I have heard times without number from people around me (moi inclusive) and many TV personalities. Observe decisions taken or choices made to attain that happy state and you’d wonder if ever the circle of unhappiness will ever cease.

It is funny what we do just to please ourselves. This search for ‘bliss’ has continued to lead people to remarry, seek more business or political advantages, have more children, make new friends, mingle with the popular and powerful, change environments, improve eating habits, enhance physical looks and seek fame…all to no avail.

So far, none of man’s attempts to quench that thirst seems to be effective. Folks, they are what they are – vanity upon vanity.

A discontented soul can never be happy. People are increasingly imprisoned by the need to live up to the expectations of men whilst they suffer privately. We can’t possibly fathom the extent of the tears that flow in the privacy of many homes or offices.

Perhaps, what we are looking for is far beyond our ‘physical reach’. Ask the man who has seen it all, done it all and has decided to humble himself in order to seek the divine path- the famously unpopular path. It could be that such a person may be the one who can truly testify of what this thing called happiness is.

There is a choice, an unlikely one (so does scriptures inform), only that the world makes it look like the seemingly hard and ’embarrassing’ option. How would you know, brother, if the world’s claims are true or not and why should you believe otherwise if you haven’t tried out that kind of life?

Ironically, ‘happiness’ has always been there only that people have sought it in the wrong places. The regenerated man would gladly tell you that what you have been searching for is not only within reach, it’s also easy and free. It is JESUS CHRIST! The same yesterday, today and forever!

He is everything! Your relationship with the Lord will not give you happiness. No! That would be a very shallow gift compared to what He has to offer. Happiness, my friend, is conditional and relative to external factors. Buying a car or a house would make you happy, likewise getting a promotion, a contract or excelling in your studies. Losing any of these privileges can cause sadness, isn’t it? Fortunately, what the presence of Jesus does in your life is it envelopes you in a state of joy and peace that is beyond human comprehension. The feeling is simply inexplicable yet so real and deep.

What this means is since the peace and joy of the Lord is not subject to any external happenings, you will still experience His benefits even in good times or during trying times; in abundance or in times of lack. Friends, no season of your life is strong enough to steal your joy as long as you are anchored in Christ. Praise the Lord!

Have you tried out a life in Christ, oh weary, searching, soul? I truly believe Jesus is the one who can fill any form of emptiness you may be experiencing. Everything you want and will ever need is in Him because He is ‘More than Enough’. His yoke is easy, His burden is light. He understands all your challenges more than you will ever know because he’s been there too.

His peace surpasses all human understanding. All you need to do to have it is to surrender your life to Him. Remember, silver and gold are also His so fret not. Jesus is a specialist at wrapping both success and joy in His sorrow-proof gift box and making sure the package gets to you, His beloved. What more can anyone ask for?

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.”

Matthew 11:28Come to meall you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me and I will answer thee and shew thee great and mighty things which thou knowest not.

Philippians 4:7 “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Romans 15:13 “May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
