Things I Learned at a Gas Station (Part 1)

My 1991 Buick Regal can hold up to 16.5 gallons of fuel at a time. That's a lot of gasoline, and at 25 miles per gallon, I can drive for a few days before I need to fill up again.

That's the key to continued performance of my carrefilling it when necessary. I don't usually wait until it is on empty. Not only does that make me nervous, wondering if I can make it to the next gas station, but according to my mechanic it is harder on the engine as sediment settles in the bottom of the tank and small amounts of gasoline evaporate more quickly than large amounts thus wasting gas.

So it is with our spiritual tanks. We can't go indefinitely on one filling of the Holy Spirit into our lives. As we drive down the road of life, serving God and others along the way, we use up our spiritual fuel and are in need of a constant refilling.

Also like the gas tank on my car, we shouldn't wait until we are totally empty and dry, hoping we can make it until next Sunday when we hear the pastor's sermon to help us refill our heart tanks or until that next prayer meeting when we can ask our brothers and sisters to pray for us because we've become dry. Sediment (day-to-day stuff) can settle in the bottom of our tanks and sit there, slowing us down, keeping us from optimum performance in our service to God. At other times we may start to feel spent and then we sit back and let the rest of our spiritual strength evaporate as we do not use it to serve God and others.

The key is to refill our spirits oftendaily for optimum results.
