Self-Serve (Part 3)

by Lynn Jacobs
9/06/2007 / Devotionals

Do you remember the old gas stations of yesteryear with the attendants who would fill your tank, check your oil and tire pressure, wash your windows, etc. Then along came the self-serve islands at those gas stations, and eventually almost all gas stations became self-serve.

Self-serve stations became so popular because they are so convenient. You don't have to wait for the attendant to assist you, and at some gas stations you even receive a discount for pumping your own gas.

Saints in the Old Testament required the assistance of a priest in order to remain in a relationship with God, like a gas station attendant who would stand between us and the source of the fuel and act as the go-between.

But now, because of Christ and His work at Calvary, we do not need someone other than Christ himself to assist us to hook up to our source of spiritual power. We can receive a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit directly from God, the owner of the filling station, instead of a priestly attendant to assist us.

Some people talk about "the good old days," and some things from back then were good. But I'm so glad we are in the good new days and have direct access to God the Father through His Son, Jesus Christ, without the assistance of anyone else.

"In Him and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and confidence." (Ephesians 3:12, NIV

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we areyet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." (Hebrews 4:15-16, NIV
