Young Cook Ministers to Jesus on Christmas Eve

By Greg Miller © 2017

From her days as a young girl, Frances felt God had given her a special ability to work for Him in the area of specialized ministry.

“I believe the Lord blessed me with some amazing gifts,” Fran told her school teachers. “I’ll always try to use those gifts to serve Him.”

By the time she completed the second grade, Frances had developed a definite talent for cooking, as well as a vivid imagination for creating great culinary masterpieces. At the conclusion of the school year, her teacher, Miss Faye, wrote a note to Frances’ parents, “I’m very impressed with your daughter’s cooking skills. Those cookies she brought to the class last week were the best cookies I’ve ever eaten.”

Frances’ mom, Fern, replied with a note of her own, “Thanks for your kind words about Frances. We are blessed to be able to enjoy her delicious treats on a daily basis, so we’re fully aware of her God-given gift.”

Frances invested many hours in the practice of her culinary artwork. She had a special fondness for sweets and, by the time she reached the eighth grade, she began providing desserts for all the family’s Sunday afternoon meals. Frances was determined to use her cooking ability for God and her mom was equally as determined to provide constant opportunities at home.

At the age of 13, Frances began a new tradition. While many youngsters were still busy leaving milk and cookies underneath the Christmas tree for the jolly old elf in the bright red suit, Frances baked a birthday day cake for Jesus. She gently crafted the words, “Happy Birthday, Jesus” across the top of the cake.

Frances prepared to go to bed on Christmas Eve. Completing her ritual, she placed the cake on the kitchen table. She also left a handwritten note, “Dear Jesus, Here is my birthday cake for you this year. There is some delicious milk for you just inside the refrigerator. I didn’t leave it on the table because I didn’t want it to spoil.”

Christmas morning was always a wondrous time at Frances’ home. Frances’ mom cooked a delicious Christmas breakfast, and the family enjoyed a time of togetherness  before exchanging presents.

Frances noticed Jesus’ entire birthday cake was gone. A neatly-written note was on the table. The note read, “Thank you, Frances, for the delicious birthday cake. I had a big piece of it and it was very tasty. I wanted to share the cake with some local children whose family is very poor. They also thought the cake tasted very good!”

Frances smiled broadly and whispered, “A good cook always appreciates a compliment, and you can’t get any better than a compliment from the Son of God!”
