Serving God or mammon

by Reverend Wanda Shoap
9/10/2007 / Bible Studies

Taken straight from the Authorized King James Version of The Bible.

Matthew 6:24-32

24. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other: or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Note: Do you know what the word "mammon" means?

~ In the Strong's Concordance, Greek, #3126 fig. wealth.

25. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26. Behold the fowls of the air; for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27. Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28. And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29. And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you. O ye of little faith?

31. Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithall shall we be clothed?

32. (For after all these things do the Gentiles see:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

~ Do you pray for wealth? Do you think that God does not have any idea of what you need? Will he see that you have what you need? Do you have faith?

~ Inside all scripture is a wealth beyond material wealth. There is also wisdom and understanding that will make your life rich in knowledge.

~ Do you feel that God owes you these things that have been mentioned in these scriptures? Or do you feel you must earn them? How do you earn them?

~ God will indeed see that you have these things but what are His rules, His commandments? Do you know them? Do you listen to what He tells you? Do you do as He says? Do you sin? What do you do if you do sin? Do you shake it off and forget about the sin and expect to be given these things?

~Well, here is the answer to all the questions that you may ask.

Matthew 6: 33-34

33. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

~Did you understand the answer?

~What does verse 34 mean?

~Don't think about tomorrow, do what today requires of you, be right with God today. Tomorrow will bring sufficient evil to be dealt with then.

~We have to take each day, one day at a time. We have to deal with our sin daily and we have to seek God's grace daily to be forgiven of those sins.

~If we only worry about what might come tomorrow we tend to forget about today.

~But what about yesterday? Oh no, now what do we do?

~Yes, you got it. God knows what we did yesterday.

~Did you forget? Maybe?

~Well, get right with God today and all the days you've missed before today.

~Deal with tomorrow, tomorrow! Learn from yesterday and today, for tomorrow may bring even more evil. Be ready!

~For tomorrow might never come!
