THE PROBLEM OF THE MEANING OF LIFE

by Gabriel Abina
4/23/2018 / Christian Apologetics

The question of the meaning of life has bedeviled so many a people – from the professor to the illiterate petty trader at the side of the road or the uncivilized far away in some yet still pre-modern societies. Indeed, the human sacrificing savage and the civil right promoter are held captive by this soul binding demon. One does not know how to live or why he does, so he doesn’t care about others; the other lost to the control of his desires (since he doesn’t understand why he lives) champions the cause for more absurdities. Both are alike in their captured reasoning.

Whereas once we accused the savage as been uncivilized, today we reel in the meaninglessness of our civility. We thought that more sophistication in excitement would make life significant; that the acquisition of ostentatious things will promote purposeful living and happiness – something to aspire to. On the contrary, we are lost in the ocean of our empty desires. We are entangled in the labyrinth of purposeless existence; and our lost of direction has proven that we know next to infinitely nothing about life or what it means to live.

We have (as have been taught) by our materialistic culture, acquired so much of what we do not seem to need (but we want) and none of that which we need. Little wonder we reel in the throes of unhappiness and great contention within us. Driven by the desire not only to eat, we devour whatever pleases us. And whatever the eyes desire we withhold not from them. Hence, debauchery and incivility, children of our stupefaction litter everywhere and abound. There seems to be a hopeless end to this malady, especially in the foreseeable future.

As it is written in the Bible, where do clamour, internecine wars and conflicts come from; anxiety and heart ache and pain, but from our greed and riotous living? Having failed to preserve lives by the empty chivalry of entertainment, we are now considering the morality of suicide; perhaps creating a facility to that effect.

Our definition of life has failed us. Or should I say we have betrayed the meaning of life. However, it’s impossible to betray what we know not. For if I say we have betrayed the meaning of life, it would mean that we had at one time understood it. That would contradict my stand point, for I mean to say we have never understood it.[1] Although, I must say, quite pontificatingly, that there are those who parade themselves in the royal robe of knowledge – as wielding the interpretation of all dreams and visions. But some of us do know that they are the most pretentious of all. Yes, they are the worst of liars; for they are only in line to defend the most absurd and the unthinkable. They cover up their confusion with academic and theological jargon to the applause of unsuspecting buffoons.

A certain man, philosopher by profession, once lived. In his ambiguity, he enthused that God is dead and placed man in his place. By implication, the custody of life changed hands. Man became the one who decides what he thinks of life. Limited to the cycle of time, life lost itself to us…

What we have failed to realize is before us existed life. In the light of that, we don’t have the luxury of such exalted position to be its decider. Rather, its decision lies in its origin. But that is also controversial. Notwithstanding, until we come to fully agree that life is beyond our comprehension of it; and its origin is beyond the scope of books, we may neither comprehend it nor harness its power.

There is a need for man to concur that the origin of life was not Darwin’s intelligence (Darwin himself knew nothing about it). It wasn’t a small particle either; or the beginning of the universe. It definitely transcends all those. Of course it contains the beginning of the universe, albeit, it goes way beyond and before that.

Life exists with purpose and design buried deep within its originator. To understand the meaning of life therefore, we have be acquainted with its originator. We find the originator – the grand weaver, we find the origin; we locate the origin, we find the purpose for living. It’s as simple as that.

If we attribute a designless origin to life, we condemn ourselves to the bottomless pit of meaningless living and uncontrollable gratification. Rather than save humanity, we will destroy it. For instance, we are taught that life originates with the universe and that man evolved from smaller species. To armed with this doctrine find little purpose of life. They value life less and live only for self aggrandizement. Since by definition, it is a class struggle and the survival of the fittest, it is only moral that the strong exterminate the weak. The results speak for themselves: Two world wars, the Holocaust, Communist purgings and series of killings that have wiped millions of human lives.

I dare to say as I conclude that man has to go back to his roots. We have lost with the origin of life, which is divine, hence lost the meaning of life. As earlier said, the meaning of life lies in and with its designer; and since we have lost him or killed him, it is only wise if we find or bring him back from the dead. Anything otherwise, the world will become worse.

[1] I do admit that a handful of people who allowed the touch of the divine do understand the meaning of life.
