4 Great Lessons from the Life of Apollos

by Ogaga Eruteya

Certain names in the bible hardly do more than ring a bell.

And that’s because not too many things were written about them or what they did. In spite of that, we often find great lessons from their little narratives.

One of such is Apollos; a Jew born at Alexandria.

Scripture describes him as an eloquent man who was mighty in the scriptures. He ‘had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John’ (Acts 18:24 NKJV).

He began to speak boldly in the Synagogue. Then a certain couple, Aquila and Priscilla heard him and took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26 NKJV).

Now, here are 4 salient lessons from this account:

#1. There Will Always be Something More to Learn

With such intimidating credentials, the natural tendency is to think there could be nothing more the man was missing. But just before we get blown away in admiration, we are alerted he knew only the baptism of John.

This shows the insufficiency of any and every believer in spite of whatever attainment. In the school of the spirit, in the things of God and His kingdom, in our mundane life, there will always be something more to learn.

That’s a reality we shouldn’t let out of our minds.

#2. We Must be Open to Learn From Anyone Regardless of Status

At the time, Apollos was already gaining popularity. But it was some little-known couple – Priscilla and Aquila who explained to him ‘the way of God more accurately’ (Acts 18:26 NKJV).

That someone has no screaming portfolio in ministry does not mean they may not be well-positioned to give spiritual guidance to someone else who is in the spotlight.

Such may have very deep dealings with God that their modest, unassuming status may not readily unveil.

#3. If We Must Grow, We Must be Teachable

Apollos had obviously learnt the blessedness of being poor in Spirit.

That Aquila and Priscilla were able to call him aside and expound more truths to him about the way of God successfully; exposes how teachable he was and how willing he was to add to what he knew.

#4. We Must Always be Humble and Sincere Enough to Admit Our Deficiency

That he took heed to what Aquila and Priscilla pointed out to him gives us a clue to what happened behind the scenes.

Being mighty in scriptures himself, He probably went back after the discussion to sincerely and humbly cross-check those things.

We must never allow ego and self-conceit, deprive us of the blessings the Lord brings our way. That is the way to go, if we must grow, remain under the hands of the Lord and be exalted in due time (1 Peter 5:7).

Eventually, Apollos was better off.

His effectiveness and productivity in ministry was greatly enhanced afterwards. With his oratory powers, he refuted the Jews publicly, showing from scriptures how Jesus is the Christ (Acts 18:28).

He it was who watered the gospel work Paul planted amongst the Corinthians. He also assisted in the advancement of the gospel in other gentile regions.

God knew ahead that he would require some additional knowledge to what he had. He worked out an arrangement for that.

And Apollos aligned to it.
