Reconciliation

by Jerry Ousley
6/15/2018 / Christian Living

When Deb and I were first married one of her brothers decided that he couldn’t stand me.  I never completely understood why.  I never insulted him or exalted myself above him but for some reason he felt that I felt that I was better than he was.  Again I never felt that way but because he thought I did he didn’t like me.  During those days he was a mean drunk.  You know there are two kinds of drunks; one that is so happy he is actually foolish and one who gets downright mean.  This brother-in-law got downright mean.

But he was a pretty good mechanic.  One day I was working on my car at another brother-in-law’s house.  He had borrowed our car and the starter went out on it and so I had to fix it (don’t ask why since he was using our car – that’s a story for another time).  Several of the brothers had gathered there that day and so as I lay underneath the jacked up car, the brother-in-law that didn’t like me came up to the car and began to shake it – yes he had started drinking already in the day.  He asked me what I was doing and so I politely told him but probably had a bit of irritation in my voice because if he had shaken that car and made it fall off the jack I was going to be in serious trouble.  He then grabbed my legs and proceeded to try to pull me out from in under the car.  I told him to stop.  There I lay with a heavy starter in one hand and a wrench in the other trying to put it on and he was doing everything he could to make me angry.  Then he said “That car doesn’t even need a starter.”  Well it did and because he was a much better mechanic than I was I told him that if he wasn’t drunk he would know better because he was a better mechanic.  That didn’t go over very well and now he was really angry with me.

He left and I finished my job and went home.  Later that evening he showed up at our house and before he left he looked at me and said, “I’ll see you later.”  I had no idea what he meant by that until an hour later he called wanting me to meet him somewhere so we could fight.  I had no intention of fighting with him and told him so.  He didn’t like it and after that we spoke very little to each other for several years.

But the day came when he got saved.  After coming to the Lord we talked, apologized to each other and became the best of friends.  We had been reconciled in our relationship.

That word “reconciliation” is a very important word in our salvation experience.  You see when Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden man was helplessly and hopelessly lost.  An impassible gap had been established between man and God.  The Bible actually tells us that we were enemies to God (see Romans 11:28 and Colossians 1:21).  Because God was perfect in every way and man was imperfect in every way there was no hope for us to be reconciled back together.  That is why we needed a Savior.  Only a sinless sacrifice could pay the price for sin and pave the path for reconciliation.  Jesus Christ did that.  When He died on the cross he became the Sacrifice of sacrifices paying that sin penalty.  That was the significance of the veil being torn in two in the Temple when Jesus died.  It showed that the price needed to bring reconciliation between God and man had been taken care of and now man had access once again to the throne of God.

When we come to the Lord in repentance asking forgiveness for our sin, then the sacrifice of Christ takes affect and we are reunited – reconciled back to God.  We who were once enemies are now made friends.  We who were so imperfect and unworthy to stand before God now have been made perfect and worthy but only by the blood of Christ.  Now we can come boldly to the throne room of God without worry of being struck down instantly (see Hebrews 4:16).  We who were enemies with God are now friends.  What a great word!  What a miraculous concept!  Praise God that we have been reconciled to Him but only through and by the blood of Jesus Christ.
