Gems in Genealogy

by PamFord Davis

Are you a genealogy researcher?

If you are, you know the importance of census information. I was with my husband when he found information on his Grand Pa’s family. Later, he traced the Davis family back to his great-great-great grandfather. (Other researchers have taken it back further.)

Eureka!

Information contained in old census files played a crucial part.

The Bible includes a great deal of genealogy.

Does God take a census?

“But of Zion it shall be said, ‘This one and that one were born in her;’
And the Most High Himself will establish her.
The Lord will count when He registers the peoples,
‘This one was born there.’ Selah (Psalm 87:5-6 NASB).”

Jesus, God’s Son, the Son of Man was born in the city of Bethlehem. His genealogy through Joseph (his earthly father) is found in Matthew 1:1-17.

“So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations (Matthew 1:17 NASB).”

We find another ancestry listing in Luke 3:23-38.

“… the son of Enosh, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God (Luke 3:38 NASB).”

Census books are valuable.

You are of far greater worth; is your name recorded in the book of life?

“He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels (Revelation 3:5 NASB).”
