Couple Hosts Guests for Labor Day Celebration

Bobby and his wife, Barbara, had favorite Scripture verses for every holiday, and Labor Day was no exception.

In fact, for Labor Day, the couple had two favorite Scripture passages for the first Monday in September. One Scripture was Ecclesiastes 9:10, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”

Their second Scripture of choice for the holiday was Colossians 3:23-24, “and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance; for ye serve the Lord Christ.”

Like many other workers, Bobby and Barbara were both off work for Labor Day. Also like others whose employers gave them the holiday off with pay, Bobby and Barbara spent time sharing freshly-grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, homemade potato salad and lemonade made with fresh lemons and real cane sugar.

The couple invited several neighbors to help them celebrate the holiday meal. Baron and his wife, Bridgett who would have celebrated the holiday alone because their son was in the Army and he had recently been deployed overseas, came to the celebration. Bartholomew, and his girlfriend, Beda, who were preparing for their second year of college, were also invited.

After enjoying the food and festivities, everyone gathered in the back yard to discuss the Labor Day holiday. Baron thanked Bobby and Barbara for their hospitality. “We appreciate you having us over for this super holiday feast,” Baron stated.

“Yes,” said Bridgett, “You two are such great neighbors, always going out of your way to make everyone feel welcome! And you do such a good job of making everyone in the neighborhood feel at home, those of us who work on the job, those who are retired, and those who are headed off to college.”

Beda said she had also noticed that Bobby and Barbara also made the children in the neighborhood feel very welcome, quoting Matthew 19:14, “But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

“Children are, indeed, always welcome here,” said Barbara.

Bartholomew had been thinking about the Labor Day holiday for several years. “I have a question about Labor Day,” he said. “There’s something that doesn’t make much sense to me.”

“What’s your question, Bartholomew?” asked Barbara.

“The holiday is called Labor Day, but so many people take the day off work. I think we should change the name of it to ‘No Labor Today Day.’”

“You’re funny!” laughed Beda. “You should become a stand-up comedian!”

“I would,” Bartholomew chuckled, “but I’m having too much fun sitting down!”
