Ever rub elbows with the rich?

“My brothers, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.  For example, a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in.  If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say, ‘Sit here in a good place,’ and yet you say to the poor man, ‘Stand over there,’ or, ‘Sit here on the floor by my footstool,’  haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He has promised to those who love Him (James 2:1-5 HCSB)?”

Ouch; James steps on our toes!

We like to get close-and-personal with prosperous people. We’re prone to keep the poor at arm’s length. Rich or poor, men and women are made in the image of God.

“God created man in His own image;
He created him in the image of God;
He created them male and female (Genesis 1:27 HCSB).”

We might judge a person’s worth by his or her wealth. 

Can a value be placed on a person’s life? 

Jesus believed we were of great value; He staked His life on it.

“No one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13 HCSB).”
