Unprecedented Murder of Christians in Northern Nigeria
by Sim Lee
11/14/2018 / World Affairs
"Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth" 1 Corinthians 13:6 NIV
It seems so strange in the West where so many people simply want Christians to be quiet and non critical, while at the same time Christians are being killed, injured and displaced in the East in numbers never seen before. There are so many places of this happening that one loses focus upon which one of the 7,500 Christian sects is suffering which fate at which time. Even the Vatican estimates that over 100,000 Christians were killed because of their faith during 2017.
And Muslims are also suffering and dying in record numbers from sectarian violence, and with over 1,400 Muslim sects in the world, again, it is too hard to wrap ones mind around this magnitude of murder. From being killed for your faith, or for the way you pray and for the space you occupy, or just for simple elimination, it all does not resonate enough with the West to spurn serious political sanctions.
If we were to focus on the one Christian population which seems to resonate the best with the writings of the FaithWriters, it would have to be the Christians of Northern Nigeria. (35% of FaithWriters daily web site traffic now originates from Nigeria - source: EasyCounter.com).
In this area, small children being hacked to death with machetes (250 in one incident during August) just for being the children of Christian farmers, and there have been tens of thousands of Christian farming area villagers violently murdered or displaced from their towns and farms.
All manner of Christians are being eliminated from the land by terrorists posing as Muslim Fulani herdsmen who are allied with Boko Herom as the opportunity presents itself. The murder rate of Christians in the Muslim controlled north is three times that of anywhere else in the world and keeps accelerating.(over 8,000 this year so far).
Looking at oversight groups' statical data, an average of 34 Christians a day were murdered through the first six-months of 2018 north of the country's middle belt and it is seemingly beyond the ability of the Nigerian Government or the United Nations to stop or amend these murders and displacements.
There has been another announcement (now in November) from the UN that it is going to conduct another inquiry into this genocide, but with Nigeria being the eight largest oil-producing company, it is unlikely that anything will be done soon. Left to continue as is, there is a great chance it will spread to the border countries, and it will surely split Nigeria in half between a north faction (Muslim majority) and a south faction (Christian majority) separated by the country's middle belt.
Under such conditions, distressed people reach out for comfort to outside sources as they can. During this time that is like no other, they are grateful for any of the encouragement, teachings, devotionals or a sharing of the Gospel that they search for on the web. It gives them a reason to rejoice in the midst of such danger and despair. It is a light of hope and purpose for them, and something positive for these fellow Christians who constantly live under the threat of death because of their faith.
