Grand Marshal

by PamFord Davis

Over 3 million spectators braved the New York City cold for the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Love or lunacy? You decide. I’m a coward; there’s no way I’d willingly watch a parade in such cold weather. On the other hand, when at a Chicago parade I needed an umbrella.

It wasn’t raining; it was the dog days of summer and I was protecting our baby daughter from the sun. It was a momentous event; the people of Chicago welcomed our nation’s astronauts with a tickertape parade. They were the first men to walk on the moon; only a privileged few walked on the moon. Many have walked in parades.

It’s an honor to be chosen as Grand Marshal in a parade.

“Haman told the king, ‘For the man the king wants to honor:  Have them bring a royal garment that the king himself has worn and a horse the king himself has ridden, which has a royal diadem on its head. Put the garment and the horse under the charge of one of the king’s most noble officials. Have them clothe the man the king wants to honor, parade him on the horse through the city square, and proclaim before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.’

The king told Haman, ‘Hurry, and do just as you proposed. Take a garment and a horse for Mordecai the Jew, who is sitting at the King’s Gate. Do not leave out anything you have suggested.’ So Haman took the garment and the horse. He clothed Mordecai and paraded him through the city square, crying out before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor (Esther 6:6-11 HCSB).”

Mordecai was honored; Haman (who hated Mordecai) was humiliated.
