"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." John 1:5 NIV
While auto touring some of the American Civil War battlefields, my sons and I traveled on over to see Mammoth Cave, where the Confederacy received its main supply of nitre during the war to make black gun powder.
The excellent historical guided tour brough light to the many covert operations of General Joe Johnston and it also offered an experience enjoyed by all present: total darkness,
The Guide had already taken us taken deep into the cave and, upon reaching a certain point, he had all the people of the tour stand still. He then turned off all the footpath, plunging us into a quick, thick and very rich darkness.
His voice clearly told us that this darkness had been proven to be a total darkness that few people ever experienced. About that same time, he struck a single match and it was incredible how much light that small match poured into the darkness for that moment. As it started to fade, the lights were turned on again and the historical tour continued.
I have never forgotten how the deepest of all possible darkness yielded so completely that day to that small point of light.
So also is how the darkness melts before the Gospel when a mind hungry for truth and meaning hears and believes. Years of walking in darkness, sometimes seemingly totally hopeless darkness, are swept aside and love fills the space where darkness once stood.
Unlike the light from a star striking the eye of the beholder from so far away, the light from God that pierces the heart of a believer when first they believe has traveled beyond all time and distance and no amount of darkness can reflect, bend nor break it. God's light transcends all.
There are many ways to illustrate the light of our Savior's guidance and love. This is the one that was given to me for my understanding and I hope it has served the greater conversation.
