A Heart of Compassion

Bullying has brought the cruelty of children to our attention. Not all children tease, taunt, and ridicule others. Most children are caring, compassionate and kind. Though from long ago, a tender act of compassion came to mind.

I was 7 months pregnant (for our son Lee) and daughter April was in the terrible two’s. I had been experiencing back pain for several days and was lying on my bed. Having sprained my back in the past, I thought I’d done it again. The pain worsened.

In tears, I broke down and called my doctor. She asked about all of my symptoms and diagnosed me with a kidney infection and said she’d call in a prescription. I had hopes of relief from my pain.

April was touched by my tears and gave me something to wipe my eyes. She came to my side with a torn & tiny piece of Kleenex. That was love; that was the compassion of a child, my child. I am ‘God’s chosen child;’ I will choose a heart of compassion.

“So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful (Colossians 3:12-15 NASB).”
