Third Graders, Teachers Aim to Teach Lessons

An elementary school decided to try an experiment to liven up the school year, and also to prove the point that both students and teachers are equally capable of learning.

All of the school’s students were excited about the special promotion. Evelyn, Edward, Ervin and Emerald were among one class of third graders who participated in the experiment. All students in the class were Christians, so they made a point to teach Mr. Edwin a singular lesson.

Mr. Edwin, the teacher of the class, was determined to teach the students a very important lesson, so he focused on teaching all the students the same lesson.

Ervin was scheduled to be the first student to teach Mr. Edwin. “Here’s my lesson for the day,” he said. “I’m scheduled to speak first, and my lesson is to show the importance of being a gentleman. I want to allow Evelyn the opportunity of sharing her teaching moment first. Evelyn, what lesson would you like to teach Mr. Edwin today?”

Evelyn thought for a moment. “Thank you, Ervin, for being such a gentleman. I feel that’s a very important concept for all of us. My lesson is that the oldest and the youngest can learn from each other and, since Mr. Edwin is the oldest person in the class, so although he is our teacher, I think it’s important that he always has the opportunity to show that he is continuing his education by learning from us.”

Edward was very fond of his baseball card collection, and he had asked Mr. Edwin in advance for, and had been granted permission, to bring a collectible card to each student. “My lesson is that when we give something to someone, the gift should be seen as valuable by the giver,” Edward said. “If it’s viewed as valuable by the giver, the receiver should be thankful for the generous spirit in which the gift is given.”

“I know what you mean,” said Emerald. “My parents gave me the name Emerald because green is their favorite color, and many emeralds are pure green. And one of the reasons green is their favorite color is because it is the color of American paper money.”

Each day, a different student presented a short statement in an attempt to teach Mr. Edwin a specific lesson about a particular thing. Mr. Edwin waited until the last day of the school year to present his own lesson.

“My lesson is one of thanksgiving,” he said. “I have always believed good things are worth waiting for, and I just wanted you to know that I’m just as thankful to God as you are that today is the last day of school!”
