A New Awareness For The Workplace

"Grace carried me here and by grace I’ll carry on." .. Anonymous
It is always a pleasure to hear of, or see someone regain control of their lives. Everything is usually win-win for everyone involved, especially family. Yes it is always good news, but usually not the only news.
With the additional swing in homelessness and male suicides in all U.S. major cities and both coasts being caused by he use of opioids, medical research is taking a closer look at a specific brain damage caused by significant drug and alcohol use. The results for those studied who were rehabilitated are somewhat unsettling.
Although known since 2013 that even moderate drinking causes brain shrinkage, in these latest studies there was significant shrinkage to be found in the area of the brain where we generate our self control. That is not a good thing, as it means less self-control on the part of the rehabilitated as well as the active addicts*. Further, the area of the brain where we get our desire for thrills and desire for excitement is not effected, Decreased self-control and increased thrill seeking is a bad combination, especially for someone who has been declared "rehabilitated" and is no longer under clinical supervision.
This combination caused by the altering of the brain from alcohol and drug abuse changes a normally social acceptable person into one who see people as being one of two types: (1) someone who can get the what they want and (2) someone who blocks them from getting what they want. They will try to manipulate the first type of person and try to maneuver around the second type of person.
This is relatively new information and should at least be considered when working with, hiring or dealing with a person who has been rehabilitated from drug and alcohol abuse. Some will reverse the damage with continued abstinence,** but no two people are the same and a short temper should not be ignored.
Not all are within the reach of a normal life, and not all are cured by medicine, but there is no one who is not within the reach of God's grace.
