Matthew 24:35
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
Based on the scripture, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope,” this email/blog devotional is designed to help you and me seek and track these plans of God. Sadly, however, much criticism has been levelled at the use of that verse in Jeremiah, stating that it was only intended for the Jews at one time in history and that we cannot personalise it today in the 21st century. Let’s examine that thought in context.
There were 3 exiles to Babylon. In 605 B.C. the Babylonians invade Judah and first wave of exiles was taken (Daniel and his friends were taken among these). In 597 B.C. Jehoachin becomes king of Judah and the Babylonians capture Jerusalem. A second wave of exiles takes place. Almost 10 years later the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple. A third wave of Jews was deported to Babylon. It was at the third wave that Jeremiah wrote these words: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfil to you my promise and bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Though God’s people were being judged for their sin, he promised he would restore their fortunes.
Five hundred and eighty-six years later Jesus the Messiah was born. God loved the world so much that he sent his son to redeem the world from sin. Whoever believes in him will know the promise of eternal life by being restored to God out of the exile of sin. Just as the Jews were taken into slavery because of their sin, all mankind is in slavery today, because of sin. This is why Jesus came. He is God’s Way for our spiritual return from exile. Through Christ God restored those who believe, to his righteousness, just as the Jews were restored to Jerusalem. God knew the plans he had for his people almost 2,600 years ago – plans for welfare and not for evil, to give them a future and a hope. And, through Christ, God knows the plans he has for you today in the 21st century.
God’s word stands forever. Once a prophetic word is spoken it can never be revoked. Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” Again, in Jeremiah we read: “I am watching over my word to perform it.” That word was for Judah at that time but, by our personal relationship with an omnipotent, omnipresent, omniscient and eternal God, it is also for us, today!
I know the plans I have for you, today, declares the Lord!

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY
By faith I stand on the promise of that word and believe my future will be blessed, just as the Jews were blessed when they were restored to Jerusalem.
“O God my Lord, thank you for your enduring word. What you said to your chosen ones thousands of years ago still stands today for those who are chosen, through Christ. I confess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. I repent of sin and seek your righteousness in all I do. I acknowledge you, O Lord, in all my ways and trust you to direct my paths. Therefore, I know you have plans for my life – plans for welfare and not for evil, to give me a future and a hope. By faith, I stand on the promise of that word and believe my future will be blessed, just as the Jews were blessed when they were restored to Jerusalem. Amen!”
