Communion Means Remembering Christ on the Cross

"Communion" means many things; closeness, or "intimacy," where you know someone very well and you share secrets. It can also mean celebrating together, by eating together.

According to one pastor, the word for “Communion” is related to thanksgiving, so that when we thank the LORD it is a form of Communion.

All of these things are part of the holy ceremony of Communion.

Although when Jesus held the Last Supper, which we call Communion, or the Eucharist, the eve before His dying on the cross, He was both happy and sad.

Jesus said in Luke 22:15 to the disciples, "...With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer."

"And He took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, 'This is My body, which is given for you; this do in remembrance of Me.'" (Luke 22:19)

As believers, most of us have experienced eating the wafer symbolizing Jesus' precious body broken for our healing, and grape juice symbolizing His glorious blood spilled for the forgiveness and cleansing of our sins.

But did you know you don't have to wait until you go to church to take Communion?

As kings and priests and children of the living God, we are free to take Communion in our home! Communion, the breaking of bread with one another, is sharing times and events, and talking about things very important to us; things we wouldn't talk about with just anyone.

And so does He, the risen Lord, desire to "break bread"-- to communicate with, talk—with us, and not just at church. Praise the Lord, we are the Church! And He wants to enjoy the intimacy of close relationship with us, His brothers and sisters, wherever we are.

God led my our family to start this ritual months ago. We don't have a regular schedule for it, but take it when we feel the Lord impressing us to do so.

We hold this sacred ritual in the evening, just before we start the bedtime ritual of Bible stories, short discussion of prayer needs, and the prayer for our 10-year-old daughter, Victoria.

We have a special candle and holder that we have dedicated to our honoring of the Lord in Communion. We light the candle, then pray and ask God to forgive us of our sins. If one of us feels we are "in the flesh," which means being upset at someone, we know that, as the Word says, we should not take Communion until we truly have forgiven and made up with the person, or done whatever else we need to do.

We welcome the Holy Spirit and ask Him to minister to us and help us understand more about Him. Then Clayton reads scriptures and otherwise speaks what God has laid on his heart.

After that we take the bread (we buy the Communion crackers and the cups for the grape juice at a local book store) and listen while Clayton reads the appropriate scriptures, and eat it, all three of us at once.

Next, Clayton reads another Scripture or two, and speaks a few minutes if the LORD has brought something to his mind. Then we take the grape juice (We pray over the bottle of grape juice and ask God to anoint it before we use it for Communion) poured into the cups and drink it together.

If Victoria has any comments or questions, we answer them, reading the pertinent Scriptures if needed. We do this right before her bedtime ritual, and it is special and powerful for us all.

Try it. Ask your parents if you can please do this as a family. If they don't want to yet, keep praying. God will open the door and change their hearts, in His time. The main reason we take Communion with the wafers and juice is to remember the awesome love Jesus showed for us on the cross.

So when you keep remembering how good the Lord is to you and thank Him in your hearts and out loud, that will bless Him, and He is worthy!
