What is Love?

by Tonja Taylor
3/03/2020 / Christian Living

The LORD elaborates upon Love in I  Corinthians 13:4-8.

I really like using Scriptures from th.e Amplified Bible, one of my favorites, because it truly increases my natural understanding of the text. I do ask the LORD to "open my eyes to see rnarvelous things in His Word before I read, too.

He is so good and I know we can never receive all of the treasures His Living Word has to offer, for it is part of His manifold wisdom, but l am so thankful for how He speaks to us through it today

Thank the LORD that Jesus Christ, the Word of God, Who is Love, is the same yesterday, today, and forever, as Hebrews 13:8 states!

Let's look at Love according to God, verse by verse:

Verse 4: Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious or boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughily.  It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God's  love in us) does not insist on it's own rights or it's own way; it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it;'it pays no attention to a suffered wrong.

Okay, let's be honest here (Which reminds rne, it tickles me when, especially after a decade of listening to any Bible-believing pastor and he or she will bebe preaching, and in the middle of it, say, "Can I be honest?" I will think, Well yes, I trust you've been honest this whole time!)

Unfortunately sometimes, perception is reality, and the enemy will use things that are the opposite of Love to cause as many offenses and problems as possible—to keep unbelievers from ever believing, because they can't seem to find a Christian who measures up to the standards they think we are supposed to have (not that most believers have ever read the Bible, they just have a perception of what the Bible says); or to keep believers in strife with one another, jealous and envious (which springs, to me, From being unthankful of the goodness of God toward oneself), pride, and being judgmental, critical, self-righteous, and other things against the nature of God, Who is Love (I John 4:8).

If you need more Love in your life (and who doesn't)--or, rather, to let more of God Who is Love flow through your life to others--then meditate (which simply means to think about over and over, and to even speak out to yourself about whatever you're thinking on) on I Corinthians 13:4-8 (The Passion Translation):

4 Love is large and incredibly patient." Love is gentle and consistently kind to all. It refuses to be jealousb]" when blessing comes to someone else. Love does not brag about one’s achievements nor inflate its own importance. 5 Love does not traffic in shame and disrespect, nor selfishly seek its own honor. Love is not easily irritated or quick to take offense.6 Love joyfully celebrates honesty  and finds no delight in what is wrong.7 Love is a safe place of shelter, for it never stops believing the best for others.Love never takes failure as defeat, for it never gives up.

8 Love never stops loving. It extends beyond the gift of prophecy, which eventually fades away. It is more enduring than tongues, which will one day fall silent. Love remains long after words of knowledge are forgotten.

Remember, above all, God loves you, for He gave Jesus Christ for you to free you from the penalty for your sins (John 3:15-17) and give you a wonderful life on earth, and then in Heaven, after your body dies (John 10:10)!
