What Are You Expecting?

by Tonja Taylor
4/13/2020 / Devotionals

Even so it is that Christ, having been offered to take upon Himself and bear as a burden the sins of many once and once for all, will appear a second time, not to carry any burden of sin nor to deal with sin, but to bring to full salvation those who are [eagerly, constantly, and patiently] waiting for and expecting Him. – Hebrews 9:28, (AMPC)

We need to ask ourselves, especially in these strange and unsettling times, what we are really expecting.

Yesterday during Resurrection Day afternoon, after a powerful online service by my faithful pastor, I called a dear widow of whom I am fond, and was making general conversation with her.

I asked her if she’d found something good to watch.

“I’ve been watching the news,” she said. “Those storms are coming back tonight!"

I paused, a bit surprised at her reply, even though I knew that one of her habits was to watch the weather daily and anticipate the negative parts.

“You know what day this is, don’t you?” I asked politely. She’d been through a lot of hard times since her husband had died almost three years ago, and had had a lot of memory challenges.

“Yes, I know what day it is,” she said.

“Oh,” I said, “I thought you might have found some good preaching to watch for Resurrection Day or something.”

“No,” she told me.

“Okay, love you and I’ve got to go now,” I said. “I hope you have a good afternoon."

“I’ll try,” she said.

How sad, I thought, as I turned off the phone. Today is Resurrection Day--the High Holy Day for all true Believers, the best news of all; Christ Jesus is risen from the dead and lives in Heaven, always praying for us!--and she is watching the news and thinking about the potential destruction of bad storms?

I could not understand that, and I had to confess to the LORD my Father that I was disappointed, because this woman calls herself a Christian. I had been sowing the Word into this dear lady for years, and praying for her for decades. Overall, she was kind and generous and ethical. I had seen a bit of light of the Gospel in her, but still, she had made many choices that had led her down wrong paths, away from the LORD. It was sad that she was living such a fearful and nominal life, compared to what she could have.

However, I am not the judge, and the LORD loves her anyway. All of us have sinned and fallen short of His glory! But I am so thankful that, no matter what anyone else on the planet may think, I know that I know that I know that Jesus is alive, and always working all things together for the best of us who love Him and are the called according to His purpose!

Jesus is returning very soon to take all true Believers in Himself to Heaven for a blissful eternity (Rev. 22:12). That’s what I’m expecting, while enjoying Heavenly life every day on earth (Sometimes it's been a battle and a choice to attain the enjoyment of that good life, but the LORD is so good every day, no matter what!).

Our expectation is part of our faith. If you think you have no expectation of good, ask the LORD to revive your hope. Get in His Word and ask Him to speak to your heart. He will!

As He states in Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV), "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."

God's loving thoughts toward you and every person He's created are good and only good! His expectation for you is the abundant life of Christ (John 10:10), and that is what Jesus died for you to have! But you have to choose to believe that, and start expecting good from God.

Thanking Him for the good already in your life will boost your joy and expectation of more good!

We need to say, as the Psalmist (King David) does in Psalm 25:5 "Guide me in Your truth and faithfulness and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; for You [You only and altogether] do I wait [expectantly] all the day long."

What are you expecting today? Thank the LORD for all the good He's already given you, and ask Him to help you expect more.
