Psalm 24:3-4(a)
Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart
I once went to interview a blind Christian lady for one of my radio programmes who had recently been diagnosed with cancer. Delores was a widow and lived on her own in a modest little home on the edge of town. I had been asked to interview her because we were told she had a truly fresh approach to life despite her difficulties. As I walked up the path to the front door of her home, I had a sense of trepidation. I’d never been in a blind person’s home before; not to mention that this dear soul was also dying of cancer. I did not know what to expect. I reached up and rang the doorbell. A few moments later the door slowly opened and there before me stood a small frail figure of a woman.
“Hello. You must be Dudley.” Somehow the timbre of her voice took me by surprise. I was not expecting such cheer. “Uh… yes I am Dudley,” I said sheepishly taking a hold of a thin small hand stretched out limply. It was obvious that Delores was in the final stages of her illness and it was clear to me that she was blind. The figure in front of me was all of about four-foot-and-a-bit tall dressed in a long colourful skirt that seemed to swish with her every gesture. She wore a modest white blouse and a linen shawl across her shoulders, embroidered with small pink flowers along its edge. Lifting my eyes from her hand I noticed that she was wearing the most outlandish floppy hat with a great big fresh geranium pinned squarely on an upturned rim. Sensing my hesitation and obvious awkwardness Delores said, “Jesus told me long time ago that he will always love me. So, he told me to put a geranium in my hat and smile at the world.” Just six months after my meeting her I received the news that Delores had ascended the hill of the Lord and now stands in his holy place. I will never forget this giant of faith.
One thing I learned through my encounter with Delores was the fact that God is more concerned with that state of our hearts than he is with the state of our flesh. So often we become consumed with wondering why God allows disasters to come or why it seems that he does not immediately answer our prayers. We completely forget the fact that he will never abandon us. Sometimes we pray for physical tangible needs to be met while other times we pray for deeper emotional needs. Whatever our need may be, one thing is true: God answers our prayers, always. Delores was blind, she was alone and she was dying of cancer. She had prayed for and had been prayed for, for physical healing (and let me be clear here, I do absolutely believe that God heals!) but for some reason the physical manifestation of her healing was never realised. And yet, Delores had a deep inner peace that has yet to be equalled by anyone else in my experience of life. God had indeed answered her prayers. Delores was healed. Delores was whole in heart.
As we seek to track the plans and purposes of God for our lives, may we walk before God in faith with a pure heart and clean hands. May we stop pre-empting God’s purposes and, instead of putting our words into his mouth, may we take him at his word and trust that he will meet all our needs according to his riches in Christ and according to his will for our lives. God’s word is true and God is true to his word. May we ever acknowledge the Lord in all our ways and trust him to direct our paths. And may we ensure that we always seek first his kingdom and his righteousness with a pure heart and so know his provision for daily living. May we, like dear Delores, put a geranium in our hats and smile at the world.

SO, DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY
Only your peace in my heart can give me true hope for health and security
“Dear God, I’m sorry for taking your word for granted and for simply assuming that I’m walking in your will for my life. Help me not live by assumption but rather by heartfelt faith. Your kingdom and your righteousness are all I need for a life of holy living. I know that if I look for you in this way then all that I have need of in life will come to me as well. Dear God, I need healing, I need provision, I need security and I need help in daily living. However, I choose to first ask you to fill my heart with peace and hope before I realise the fulfilment of my dreams. Only your peace in my heart can give me true hope for heath and security. Thank you that you are true to your word and will give me all that I need as I seek you first. Amen.”
