Are You A Great Person?

by Olawale Ogunsola
5/15/2020 / Christian Apologetics

'As he thinks in his heart, so is he." Proverbs 23:7.

Greatness is the desire of many folks but it eludes them because it is an ordinary wishful thinking. That is why the popular saying, "If wishes were horses, beggars will ride." is true. Thanks to God, wishes only does not take anyone to the right destination desired in life.

That is the reason why being at becoming a great person in life is not at all achievable by wishful thinking alone.
Not only this, having a desire to be great is not enough but must be supported by other elements or steps. It will be futile if all the elements are not complete, because they work together and are connected.

Using the story of the children of Joseph as a yardstick, let us examine these elements one by one briefly.

Element number one : Realising the truth that you are billed for the top and eschew the smallness of your present status. You need to know that inside of you is a spirit that yearns to be great. You must possess a restless spirit not contented with mediocrity. A pushing spirit that wants to operate from the top.

You must desire it sincerely and be ready to pay the price that it calls for. Hear the words of Joseph's children to Joshua in verse 14 thus,
"Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit seeing I am a great people, for as much as the Lord has blessed me hitter?
No one was pushing these people. No one told them. They know this for themselves. No one told them. They know this for themselves. No one proposed it. They were aware of it. They knew they were not mean men meant to serve at a lower level.

Element number two : They took step to approach the right and appropriate fellow who was central to achieving their aims and aspirations, that was, Joshua, the son of Nun. He was the leader on the throne at the time and his assignment was to allocate the land for inheritance among all the tribes of Israel. Do you call him a mentor, you have not missed it at all. He was a mentor who could assist in achieving their heart desire. What was Joshua response? He replied,
"If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood Country and down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if Mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee" verse 15.

As a good and experienced mentor, Joshua made it abundantly clear to them that diligence and/or hardwork is the watchword. Risk taking is unavoidable. He was not economical with truth. He said there is land but you must brace up to disposesss the occupiers of it. You must take it by force from them because they are not ready to depart from "their" land which God of their fathers have promised to give them and their children after them. So it is a matter of rising up to possess their possessions. A right mentor, Joshua, revealed this to them.

Element number three is action : A desire remains a desire and it can remain so forever, if not followed with action. Action gets things done. Action defeats procrastination, the enemy or thief of time. Action, positive action brings good results. Action involves risks.

Every risk involved by a Saint of the Lord, is sure to be successful. That is why I call every risk taken by a child of God as "Reasonable Risks." Why? This is because every action taken by His children which is according to His will will involve Him. So, success is sure.

Any assurance of this from the Scriptures? Deuteronomy 20:1 assures,
"When thou goest out to battle against thine enemies,
and seest horses, and chariots, and a people more than thou,
be not afraid of them : for the Lord thy God is with thee, which
brought thee up out of the land of Egypt."
As it was, so it is and so shall it be forever because" Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever " (Hebrew 13:8).

In your life, the Lord must have shown Himself strong in one way or the other. He is ready to do the same and more. He is more than you have known Him. If you desire to be great, take action. If the seed of greatness is yearning to germinate in you, take action. If you want to attain your God - ordained status for His glory, take the right and appropriate steps, without fear. Let faith in you stir you to take action with the Lord on your side. Your greatness is sure.

Declare your desire, Go to a right mentor. Take action without fear? You are on your way to greatness.
Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord.
