Who Is Corrupt?

by Olawale Ogunsola
8/07/2020 / Christian Apologetics

Corruption is a word that had existed for ages. It has come to stay with mankind. This word exist in almost all languages of the world. One common thing about corruption is that no race on the earth loves it. Even in countries where every living thing is corrupt, they pretend to hate it.

That is the position of corruption and mankind in the scheme of things. One of the trending stories in every medium in Nigeria, ditto world wide, is the suspension of Ibraheem Magu. He is the immediate past acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFFC) in Nigeria. As its name implies, this body is committed to eliminating every from of economic and financial crimes in the country. This body before Magu became the head of the commission and during his tenure of five years, had tried so many prominent people.

In the course of performing its duties, this body had recovered huge amounts of money stacked away in foreign accounts of certain individuals or corporations. It has also ensured that certain influential persons who defrauded the country pay dearly for it by way of sending them to court which later jailed them.

Is such effort ought not to be commended?

It is sad that it is being touted that the former acting chairman Ibraheem Magu and his co-horts (Magu boys) have looted recovered loots. Whether this is true or not is not even the subject of this piece.

I only want us to chew over the questions, "Who Is Corrupt?"

Let me state three cases here and please be the judge. Just this morning July 20, 2020 before starting this piece, a chairman of Landlords and Ladies Associated I visited narrated a story.

What was it?

Tenants in a house contributed a certain amount of money to settle their electricity bill. They chose to keep the money with a man who lived in the house with them, a tenant also. Do you know what? He ran away with the money that is less than five thousand Naira (less than $15). Is this man corrupt or not?

In a Landlords and Landladies Association meeting, the chairman and his committee have spent two terms of two years each and other members purposed to change the team but the chairman, the treasure and the secretary insisted on continuing in office. Other members decided to raise an independent panel to examine the accounts, only to find out that every money contributed and donated to the association has grown wings and flew into a place no one knows. Are they corrupt?

During this Coronavirus pandemic that invaded the whole world, a state government in Africa decided to distribute grains as parlliatives to her citizens during a lockdown. Every councilor was invited to come for the share meant for the people of his constituency. Do you know what? A Councillor 'who loved' his people ran away with thirty bags of grains alotted to his people. Is he corrupt?

What do you have to say about a man who stole a piece of meat and a man who stole a cow? Who is a thief between the two?

Genesis 6:11-12 rreads
"The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. So God looked upon the earth, and indeed it was corrupt ; for all flesh had corrupted their ways on the earth."
My beloved reader, please pay special attention to these words, "For all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth". Are you not in the flesh as at the time of reading this? If you still have your breath in you, thank God. You are one of the living beings. Have you corrupted your way also? Are you free before your Creator, God? Examine your life and ask, "Where and how have I corrupted my way before God?"

If you cannot identify any, you can ask your God to show you where you have corrupted you way before Him. He is loving, He will tell you. Whether you identify it yourself or He shows you, all that you need to do is to amend your ways before Him. You may be pleasing yourself or men but you must be pleasing to God alone. He told Abraham,
"I am Almighty God ; walk before Me and be blameless." Genesis 17:1.

Do not preoccupy yourself with the judgement of others who are corrupt, but maintain a blameless stand before your God. Pray also for the conversion of those who are not concerned about what will happen to them tomorrow but are after looting treasures. May the Lord touch their hearts of stone to become hearts of flesh in Jesus Name. Please, let others read this through possibly by sharing it.
Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
