P.O.W.E.R.* Girl VI (excerpt) - Stepping Up to the Veil

by Tonja Taylor
8/28/2020 / Short Stories

This is so exciting! Pearl thought, as she looked out the school bus and smiled. It's so neat to have Ms. Risa as a teacher, and Queen Mother and Xi to help us! Christian school is fun!"

Pearl jumped in her seat a bit. She felt like a little kid. "Daddy God, You're so good! I can't wait to see the museum!"

"Yeah, me too!" said Robin, sitting beside her. "I bet Robert is jealous!"

"Yes," said Pearl. "I'm so glad he has to grow a few years before he can come!"

They talked and ate snacks as the miles flew by. Pearl and Robin shared ear buds, one each, to listen to cool Christian music on Pearl's iPod.

"Ooh, pretty!" said Robin, pointing at the trees.

"Yeah, God is such a good artist. All those colors!" said Pearl. "I'm so glad it's fall--my favorite season!"

After a couple of stops for bathroom breaks, time seemed to pass even quicker, and soon, they were crossing the big man-made lake, and seeing the tall buildings in the city.

"Wow!" said Pearl. "Those are the tallest buildings I've seen so far! And some of them look like mirrors all over!"

"Shhh!" said Ms. Risa. "Guys, I know you are excited, but please keep your voices down."

"Yes ma'am," said Pearl.

Soon, they were driving up in the parking lot of the Creation Research Museum in Dallas.

“Oh wow!” said Pearl! “That’s a giant strand of DNA! Totally cool!”

What a great day! She thought. And I’m so glad Robert isn't here! Thank You, LORD!

“All right, you mature upper elementary students!” said Ms. Risa. “You know the little ones will be watching you—you are examples to them. They look up to you, even if they act like brats, huh?!”

Pearl giggled and elbowed Robin in the seat next to her. Several other kids laughed. “Yeah!” said Burke. “My little sister is something else--”

“Okay, time to disembark,” Ms. Risa said. “Who knows what that means?”

“To scrape the bark off a tree?” said Andrea.

“What’s that got to do with getting off a bus?” Scott said.

“Shh!” said Andrea. “This is science class. And at least I was bold enough to guess!”

SHHHH!” said Mrs. Douglas, the para. “Listen!”

“Okay, I can see we need to go over our Class Contract once again,” said Ms. Risa, “so that we can remember how to act.” She held up her clipboard and quickly turned pages. “I just happen to have it right here.”

Many kids groaned and protested, but Pearl giggled. Ms. Risa was never taken by surprise!

“You know how this works," said Ms. Risa. "Repeat after me: “I am a representative of Christ and I agree to show respect to my teachers and others.” The students repeated her words. “I agree that ‘respect’ means following the rules, whether I like it or not.”

The students repeated her words, although more quietly and some with sour looks on their faces.

“Interesting!” she said. “You were not as enthusiastic on that second one. Let’s go on: I will walk in line quietly and keep my hands to myself—even if the kid behind me pokes me.....not that any of you would ever do that, no way!” She smiled. “Repito, por favor! Repeat, please!”

Some smiled, a couple giggled. They repeated what she said.

“Yes, Burke?”

“Ms. Risa, do you think we could go in now?”

She pretended to be shocked, and turned her list to show them. “But we still have 15 more that you guys chose to agree on—remember? You even signed your name!”

“But the little ones are here and we should be the first ones in the building!” said Cherie.

The lower elementary bus had just arrived.

“Hmm,” said Ms. Risa. “Tell me, can I trust you all to do the right thing on this trip, even if we don’t rehearse the rest of this list?”

They all nodded. “Yes ma’am!” most of the class said in unison.

“I believe you,” she said. “Now, show me your notebooks and pens!”

They held them up.

“Burke, where is yours?”

“Just a minute—there, Ms. Risa!” He held it up. When she looked away, he bumped the seat where Pearl and Robin sat in front of him. “Hey, do you guys have a pen I can borrow?”

Ms. Risa motioned for them all to stand and exit the bus.

Pearl looked in her purse. “Wait till we get off the bus, and I’ll look.”

As they stood in line waiting for the rest, she reached into her purse and found one. Thank You, Queen Mother, for teaching me to have plenty of pens!

She turned to Burke behind her and handed it to him. “Here Burke, I’ll loan this to you, in the Name of Jesus. Please give it back when you’re done.”

“Uh, right,” he said, taking the pen and giving her a weird look. “Thanks!”

Robin spoke over her shoulder to Pearl her. “You know he’s not gonna remember that,” she whispered.

“Well, maybe….” said Pearl. A P.O.W.E.R. Princess lends freely as God leads, she’d heard Queen Mother say, always in the Name of Jesus. They had had talks about how some people weren’t honest and that the LORD usually didn’t lead His kids to give to those tricksters—but that if God was really telling a Christian to give to one of them, that He could use it to convict them and change their hearts.

“He’s a Christian, isn’t he?” Pearl asked her. “Doesn’t every student at our school have to believe in Jesus?”

“I don’t know,” said Robin. “Mom says they are supposed to be, and that at least one parent has to sign something saying they believe in Christ—but they could be lying.”

“Hmmm…..” A P.O.W.E.R. Princess should not judge. She could hear Queen Mother’s voice. “Only God knows the heart of a person, although a person who truly believes usually loves the things of God.”

“If he’s not, maybe he’ll get saved on this trip!” whispered Pearl.

“Yeah!” said Robin. “That would be awesome!”

“GOD is awesome!” said Pearl, holding up her hand. The girls did a high five.

“You said it!” said Robin, and hugged Pearl.

“Okay, then you know how to disembark—get off the bus--properly, in order, as we always do on trips. And you know how to show excellence, don’t you?" exhorted Ms. Risa.  "Our first trip will be to the bathroom, of course! Follow Mrs. Douglas!” She stood at the front while Mrs. Douglas and the kids got off and headed toward the door.

"Do not go in until everyone is at the door, then quietly follow Mrs. Douglas," reminded Ms. Risa. "I will catch up."

As they walked toward the building, Pearl thought that it seemed a lot smaller than she thought it would be. But anyway, she was just glad to have a fun trip.

They finished the bathroom break then purchased their tickets for the 20-minute Imax-type movie about the origin of the planets. It didn’t start for at least half an hour, so they started exploring the other areas.

“Class, remember we infuse reading into every subject," said Ms. Risa. "You guys are great readers, by the way. Now, I want you to split up into groups of four and start reading the art on the walls that gives an overview of the history of our Christian heritage. I know you will remember to keep your voice down and not crowd your fellow students!”

Pearl and Robin were in the second group of four. Some of the pictures seemed to be depressing, for they spoke of certain ministers being executed. “Why are most of these so yucky?” she said, in a complaining whisper.

“It’s cool!” said Burke. “Swords and killing and stuff!”

Jordan, her usual silent self, said nothing. Pearl was sure she wished she’d been the fourth student in a different group.

“Mom says things were really dark as Christianity got going,” Robin whispered. “The devil had a lot more people tricked because the Church was so small then. But, hey! This little light of mine, right?!”

At that, Jordan nodded, but still didn’t speak.

They progressed through the murals and then came to a new section where they heard voices. Pearl looked ahead. “Hey!” she said, forgetting to whisper. “That picture is talking!”

Ms. Risa, with the first group, looked up and raised her eyebrows at Pearl. Pearl put her hand over her mouth. Ms. Risa smiled a bit and nodded.

The first group of students, enraptured, stood with Ms. Risa, just staring at the talking pictures. This is so cool, she thought. The pictures, framed in silver and taller than wide, half on one wall and half on the other, had several inches between them--yet it was as if all the people involved were in one room interacting with each other! While one person spoke, the others were apparently listening and thinking.

I love science! Pearl thought.

But then she could hear Queen Mother, in her mind. "A true Princess of P.O.W.E.R. loves God and people, and likes other things.” Okay, so I really like science! It’s awesome! Pearl corrected herself.

GOD is awesome,” she could hear Queen Mother say again. “If people truly knew the meaning of the word, they would reserve it for Him alone.”

LORD, You are awesome and help me just remember what to say when I should say it, and not when I should not, okay? thought Pearl.  Thanks!

A museum guide appeared. “You may go into the Creation Room at any time,” she said. “Stay as long as you like.”

Jordan and Burke were fascinated with the talking pictures, but Pearl and Robin stepped around the corner—and saw a veil of mist. In the center of it was a lightburst. Beyond that, Pearl could see a huge earth-globe and the Creation being enacted on the screens in the room. She hesitated, and took a breath. She looked at Robin. Neither said a word.

Wow, this is really deep, Pearl thought; different--I feel it in my heart. This is going to be amazing!

Then she stepped through the veil.
