âI donât know â" Google it!â

How well I remember my early school years. And why not? There was a lot less history to learn! I recall having my dad drive me to the library after dinner so I could do research for homework. We could sit in the big old former church building and look at boring, dusty books, trying to find articles to copy about the primary export of some microscopic country.

Now, of course, I sit at my computer and the world of questionable knowledge is at my fingertips. When we want to look up vital information about some bit player in an old movie or the available flavors of Rita’s ice, we can find it. When we don’t know the answer to something, we can say, “I don’t know — Google it!”

Solomon wisely said, “Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh” (Ecclesiastes 12:12). We are constantly learning, but God is omniscient, which means He knows everything. As my former pastor used to say, “God is the only One Who never ever learned anything.” He does not need to study, nor does He become weary. While we might get a head inflated with useless knowledge (1 Corinthians 8:1), God’s understanding is perfect, and He uses every bit of it. He also delights when we seek after true knowledge: “[I]f you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:3–5).

David exhorted his son, young King Solomon, to “serve him with a whole heart and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches all hearts and understands every plan and thought” (1 Chronicles 28:9). There is no use wearing a mask, because God can see behind the mask. When it came to sorting out the true believers from the false, “Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man” (John 2:24–25). He knows whether or not we are sincere.

According to Isaiah, “The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable” (Isaiah 40:28). As we have seen, man’s heart is easily searched by God. However, God’s understanding cannot be searched to its depths. As Isaiah continues, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9). Do you know why God knows everything? Because He is everywhere at all times. He created everything, so nothing has ever been hidden from Him. Anything we discover was already put there by God.

God is always prepared for every eventuality. He knows what will happen because He is already there. He knows what to do when we don’t. This is why we are invited to ask Him for wisdom, which He is happy to share (James 1:5). And, as the horribly-afflicted Job confessed to his great comfort, “But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold” (Job 23:10).

We think of Peter as that impulsive disciple who denied and contradicted Jesus many times. But hear these words of restoration: “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you” (John 21:17). Even when you mess up, lose faith, or otherwise think all is lost, Jesus knows your heart. He can restore your walk or call you to him if your heart is not yet his.
