Danger Of Riches

by Olawale Ogunsola
9/24/2020 / Christian Apologetics

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though
He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through
His poverty might become rich." 2 Corinthians 8:9. New King James version.

In the third week of August 2020 (twenty - twenty), an enderly man of God in his eighties saw a young man of not more than thirty years behind the steering wheels of his multi-million dollars car parked on the road side. This old man called his name and greeted him. According to the old man, the young man responded as if he was greeting a five years old boy.

What is it that can be responsible for his action?

According to the verse of the Bible with which this piece opened, it is clear that it is the right of every diligent Christian to be rich because Jesus Christ has procured it for them by paying the price.

It is not being rich that is a problem on its own but how to handle riches. Failure to handle it well can cause riches to grow wings and fly away never to come back. It can also claim the life of the rich man. Either may not happen but may lead a rich man to end in hell after this life. So, it is the handling that is more important.

Let us now consider few of dangers inherent in riches:

One, it is possible to repay good with evil. Those who seek your peace and protect your belongings who later come for your kindness can be rebuffed. You can speak rashly to them because they ask for "whatever comes to your hand" (I Samuel 25:8). They may approach you for help because of their present predicament.

The outcome of repaying good with evil is better imagined. Anything evil might be the consequences. The Scriptures state,
"Whoever rewards evil for good,
Evil will not depart from his house." Proverbs 17:13.

This means that if the rich man despises the love and kindness shown him with hatred and unkindness, it is equivalent to sowing evil.
Note well that whatever a man sows, he will surely reap.

Two, there is the danger of withholding what you have more than necessary. If you refuse to reach your hand to the poor, you are taking a very dangerous risk, here or hereafter.
"There is one who scatters, yet
increases more
And there is one who withholds
more than is right,
But it leads to poverty." Proverbs 11:24.

Three, There is this danger of becoming unapproachable. It is possible for a rich man to become too big in his own eyes that no one can talk to him, most especially people in his household or those who seem to be less successful than he is..

Anytime danger looms, they will keep quiet because no one can tell him. A servant of a very rich man, Nabal, l has this to say about his master,
"Now, therefore know and consider what you will do for harm is determined against our master and against all his household.
For he is such a scoundrels that one cannot speak to him." I Samuel 25:17.

If not for the intervention of his wife, Abigail, every male of that man's household would have been killed with a bang.

Are you approachable?

Naaman was a rich man in his right but was approachable.
This rich leper almost lost the only opportunity to be cleased from his leprosy because of anger that emanated from his pride. The weapon of cleansing, Prophet Elisha's solution was not the right thing to the rich man. He has his alternatives that was not right.

However, his servant's counsel worked well with him, He said,
"My father, if the prophet had told you to do something greay, would you not have done it? How much more then when he says, to you," Wash and be clean? " II Kings 5:13.

Náámánì avoided this danger and he did not die with his leprosy. He was healed by the instruction of a Prophet and the wise counsel of his servants.
Be wise. Avoid every danger in riches.
Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
