Who Is A Christian?

by Olawale Ogunsola

This word "Christian" never existed before the birth of Jesus Christ. It never existed in His days on the earth. The word was given birth to after He had completed His work of redemption and gone to be with His father in Heaven.

Jesus Christ refers to those who follows Him as disciples. Out of many disciples, He appointed twelve men to be Apostles. He did all within Him to make them to be His carbon copies. They were His replica. He built them up to be exactly like Him. They speak, think and act like Him. Jesus Christ reproduced Himself in them to continue the work He left behind.

Christ's disciples also continued His good thoughts, speeches and deeds throughout the world. They started from Jerusalem and did not relent until they reached the gentiles, those who did not know God but worshipped the works of men. Their good works continued unabated but they never thought of giving themselves any collective name as it is today. Meaning that the word "Christian" was never the making of the followers of Christ.

This word was the name given the disciples, who followed Jesus Christ and demonstrated all qualities of their Master, by those who were onlookers, unbelievers. Because of their ways of life that resembled that of Christ, those looking at them saw them as "little christs" who go about doing good to others. The scriptures says,
"Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul. And when he had found him,
he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they
assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were
First called Christians in Antioch. " Acts 11:25-26.

It was all that other people saw in disciples that made them to form "Christians" to refer to Christ's disciples. It was formed from "Christ". You can interpret this to mean "little Christ, small Christs, people like Christ, people carrying Christ every where and so on".

It was unbelievers who saw Christ in them and said so. It was not these disciples who fought or canvassed for this tittle. Neither did they declare or proclaim it. This is in conformity with the words of wisdom contained in Proverbs 27:2, it reads,
"Let another man praise you, and
not your own mouth ;
A stranger, and not your own lips." New King James Version (NKJV).

The disciples, many of them, collectively called, the church, were only busy representing their Master, Jesus Christ. Those who saw them proclaimed who they were in Antioch. It was other people not disciples, it was other men not their own lips that praise them to have demonstrated Christ's image and likeness ; others did!

People know them by their fruits. (Matthew 7:16).

Who are they and how did they all start? They only yielded to the call of the Master who had said to them, "My son, give me your heart,
And let your eyes observe my ways." Pro 23:26.

They were so called because Jesus Christ, by His Holy Spirit is resident in their hearts. They do nothing by their wishful thinking at all. They walk and work according to the instructions of the Spirit of Christ in them. Romans 8:14 says it right,
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."

This means that the Spirit of Christ, (God) only is the driver of disciples' lives. He gives the authority to do what ordinary man cannot do or endure. He influences each Christian to act with the aim of pleasing the Lord God of Heaven only.

Take note that it is not your declaration or proclaimation to others that makes you a Christian. Do they see Christ in you? It is not carrying a copy of the Holy Bible that makes you a Christian although it is good for it to be available that you may read and meditate on its contents and do them by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Note also that bearing a baptismal name only does not make you a Christian although you need this if you have repented of your past misdeeds and now rooted in Christ. Do not rely on your name only without having the Holy Spirit in you to do all that God wants you to do.

Your going to church and singing songs of praise only is not the ultimate of being a Christian nor preaching a powerful sermon, you must have Jesus Christ in you and allow His Spirit to instruct you and enjoy His ability in you to do all He ask you to do.

Are you a Christian? Do you follow Jesus Christ totally according to the dictates of His Spirit in you? Do you meditate in His words and do it? Then can you bear the right and true fruits with which others can say about you, "He is a Christian".
Stay blessed and prepared for the Iminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
