Forget the Turkey!

Turkey--the country--is mentioned in the Bible many times. However, the turkey bird (the one we eat every Thanksgiving, and, for many of us, every week in a ground-up form) could have become the national mascot or symble of the United States of America!

Thank goodness the decision was made to use the majestic bald eagle! Can you imagine seeing the great seal of the United States feature a common yard bird? Thank Heavens, no! 

After some debate, the founding fathers decided upon the noble bald eagle to represent the United States. 

Benjamin Franklin, however, was a bit upset. The report listed as true is that he wrote his daughter and told her he didn't like it, because, as he stated, the eagle was a bird of ignoble character. 

I'm not sure why he would think a turkey's character would be better. There is a reason that some obnoxious/selfish/untrustworthy people are known as "turkeys."

Anyway, the truth about eagles is that they mate for life. That says a lot about their character. They also lay their own eggs in their own nests (unlike some other birds) and take care of their babies, from hatching to first flights.  

There are many other fascinating facts about eagles that parallel the life of a true Christian. So that is another reason I'm so glad the eagle is our national symbol; the USA was founded so that we could be like eagles--free to soar in worship of our awesome God, Who gave us this country--and Who is working diligently to restore it!
