What You Eat Can Affect Your Vision

by Tonja Taylor

17 Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them, “Why are you debating about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Do you have such hard hearts? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear?’ And do you not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces did you collect?” “Twelve,” they answered.…Mark 8:17-19, Berean Study Bible

Adam and Eve proved it; what you eat can definitely affect how you see things!

I am speaking of spiritual vision, of course. But that is true for us today.

There are various ways to "see" better, and I will cover some of them here. One way is to abstain from eating foods that are laden with chemicals and other things that are not nutritious and can even harm our bodies. Foods with chemicals and other things, like high fructose corn syrup and other substances that do not benefit our bodies, can affect not only our spiritual vision, but our physical sight as well.

Taking supplements of various kinds can also help your vision. Bromelain and bilberry are purported to help vision, as is aloe vera and other things. Do your research, and more importantly, pray and ask the LORD about it. He created you and knows your body much better than you do!

Another way to help us see better--both in the spirit and in our physical eyes--is fasting. Fasting helps us quiet our minds and bodies (our "flesh") and gives our spirits ascendancy, where we can perceive the Spirit of God more clearly. More than one preacher I've heard through the years says that "God is always speaking, but we are often not listening."  Fasting is a way to help us hear better and see better--truly both in the spirit and in the physical senses.

Fasting is a practice in self-discipline, or denying our bodies food or drinks or sweets, or even computer or phone or tablet time.  With the LORD's help, we can take small steps of waiting longer to eat breakfast in the morning, or skipping lunch, or even a couple of meals a day.  Sometimes, like I did recently, it means simply disciplining ourselves to stay off the electronics all day or more.

Not only can fasting help our vision by clearing out bodies of junk, but our bodies--as designed by Elohim, our Creator--will start to heal themselves and come into more of a state of homeostatis, or balance. In addition, we will almost always gain energy and a sharper mind. Depending on how toxic our bodies are when we start fasting, we may at first feel cold, sluggish, sleepy, irritable, or experience other negative emotions. But that's usually just the first couple of days.

During that time, we can spend more time in the Word and prayer and praise and worship, for we will be spending less time preparing and eating food. We should drink water all through the day of course, to keep the body hydrated and also give us a feeling of fullness.

I have fasted many times, and the LORD has always rewarded me. Sometimes it was a direct answer to a request. More often, though, it has been revelation (as His reward for me disciplining myself in fasting) of things I needed to change, either through repentance or the ceasing of an activity, the change in a relationship, or the beginning of something new.

In these strange and rocky times, we must see and hear the LORD clearly. His Plans for us are so good (Jeremiah 29:11)! We want to hear Him and see clearly what His wonderful plans are, so we can cooperate with Him to get His Plan done!

Any and all of these three ideas can help you see better, especially fasting, which will cover both! Go for it, and always remember that, however you are healed and victorious, it is the goodness of our LORD Jesus Christ Who healed you!
