Brethren

by PamFord Davis
3/03/2021 / Devotionals

Two of my favorite old movies had great thee & thou dialog. Both are classics; maybe they’re in your collection.

The first was ‘Angel and the Badman’ starring John Wayne.

Gary Cooper had the leading role in ‘Friendly Persuasion.’

The brethren spoke lovingly to one another and to outsiders.

“Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you (1 Corinthians 1:10a KJV).”

I wasn’t much of a churchgoer in my youth. At first, I felt like an outsider as a new Christian. Church members addressed each other as brother and sister. They even called our pastor Brother instead of Reverend. I took a liking to it. God is our Father; we are family. We meet to worship.

‘Brethren, We Have Met to Worship’ George Atkins 1819/ Public Domain

Verse 1  Brethren, we have met to worship and adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power, while we try to preach the Word?
All is vain unless the Spirit of the Holy One comes down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Verse 2  Brethren, see poor sinners round you slumb’ring on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving, can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers and our mothers, and our children sinking down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna will be showered all around.

Verse 5  Let us love our God supremely, let us love each other, too;
Let us love and pray for sinners, till our God makes all things new.
Then He’ll call us home to Heaven, at His table we’ll sit down;
Christ will gird Himself and serve us with sweet manna all around.
