NEAR TRUTHS

Jesus used sayings that were complete Truth; He provided all the necessary details for the full picture in His Parables and sayings. But as mere mortals, with all our flaws and short-comings, our sayings tend to be based in ultra short, but memorable phrasing, which can lead to misinterpretations.

A phrase of particular interest is the one that goes "The Lord helps those who help themselves." Well, yes....of course this is not an untrue statement, but something vital has been left out of this popular phrase, which is not Biblical, by the way.

We do have to do our part, and God has a part and He will not do our part for us and yes, our lives would be a mess if we lived it in refusal and laziness, but this saying leads people to believe that God would have us be independent; that our goal should be to do as much as possible, that we should always strive to do more and maybe commission His Help. This is convoluted Christian thinking that can only lead to more error in judgment, rather than provide the guidance so many believe this phrase instills, because it leaves out the most important part.

Jesus taught His followers that we are to lean on Him completely and look to Him to provide all our needs and through this leaning we are led into what part God wants us to do.

This saying leaves out this most vital component to the whole message. As mentioned, there are sayings that may need to be slightly longer to include the whole picture, but.....

all this particular saying needs is a just-as-short rewrite--

The Lord helps those who lean on Him!

And even though this saying only has one more word than the original, it's complete, because Jesus instill His wisdom and guidance into each believer on a highly individual basis, and thus, we are complete in Him.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

I have been writing for many years. I really got serious when my 3 kids were still quite young, as they inspired me to write children's fiction. I now have 22 Amazon publications. Also, I've just completed a Bible study course. I am now a certified Bible Counsellor!
