THE PEOPLE DOWN THE STREET

by linzy bruno
3/26/2021 / Short Stories

"Things around the neighborhood certainly have changed," Jamie cautiously whispered into her husband Jason's ear, even though she knew he probably couldn't make out what she said, with all the heavy traffic and rowdiness going on. 'At least we don't have to wear those awful masks anymore,' she thought, as she gripped his hand tightly.

Jason just looked back at her with concern in his eyes.

'People around the yards are gathering to chit chat the afternoon away, now that we have our freedom back again,' he thought, 'but, that feeling of dread has not left me for a moment,' he continued in his thinking...

The couple started walking toward home, when suddenly two out of the five guys, who had been chatting for some time at the corner of Brady Hill and Lakeview Avenue, started rolling on the ground in a vicious fight in front of them; prohibiting them from going any further. Fortunately, someone, an apparent friend or relative of one of the men, pulled him out of the fight by the arm and hauled him down the street to reprimand and question him.

Jamie and Jason looked at each other with a mutual sense of shock and relief and slowly continued walking home.

"Do you think things will ever get better?" Jamie asked in a weak voice.
Jason just shook his head and said "Not with all chaos and confusion. How can it?"

Jamie shook her head, as she opened the front door and the two of them went inside. A sense of dread hung over the house that whole night.

But, the next morning, Jamie woke up with a fresh sense of hope and woke Jason to inform him of the good news.

"You know what I think we should do? Well, us and anyone else in the neighborhood who wants to join in of course........"We should gather outside with anyone who is willing to chat with other like-minded folks around here. I mean, why don't we make some signs, you know that say things like: "Jesus is LORD" and "Jesus SAVES!" Let's help God turn this thing around for our good and the good of everyone in this entire community!"

"Yeah, but the only problem with that idea is.....ummm.....are there any other Christians around here, other than the two of us?"

"Well, I don't know, but me and you could start it off."

"I'm......okay, I guess we could try," Jason replied hesitantly.

So the two of them walked down to the "Custard King," not far down their street and started chatting about the magnificent joy in the Lord that they both feel whenever they seek Him. Then they got in line for ice-cream sodas and continued their Christian banter. Suddenly, a couple approached the line; clearly hearing what Jamie and Jason were chatting about.

Jamie smiled and let out a nervous giggle when she realized what had just happened. "Hey, I hope our conversation didn't catch you by surprise.....do you guys believe in God?" she inquired, shyly.

"Well, we've talked about it many times, but we still aren't sure," the woman answered politely.

"Oh, well we would be happy to talk to you about the Lord, if you'd be interested," Jamie offered.

The two couples sat down after getting their frozen treats and chatted until they were all gripped with pangs of hunger and the sky was darkening, at which time they parted company for the day, with phone numbers exchanged.

Several months later, Jamie, Jason, Carl and Edna (the couple from the stand) met at the Custard King for a leisurely lunch. Within minutes the conversation turned to current events and from there, the spiritual battle in which the world is now grappling and of course, salvation in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

And as they all chatted happily, some people came up alongside them and began spitting hatefully at them. The four quickly made their way home after having retrieved their signs and marched down Lakeview Avenue with them. After some time, they all stopped to rest; sitting on the ground. Suddenly, they were spotted by a couple from Brady Hill, who were highly curious as to what they were picketting about, so they peered out of their kitchen window, and eventually their front yards and finally stood before them with signs of their own that read: Black Lives Matter and Love Is Love.

"What now?" Jamie whispered into Jason's ear.

Then Jason bravely stood up before the crowd. "This country was founded on godly principles. Don't you all think it odd that your organizations have not stopped, or even slowed down the problems we face? That's because only God can save us. He did it when He sent Jesus to die for us and He's going to do it again when He sends Him to save us out of the hell that is going to come on this whole world and that day is soon my friends! Repent and come to Christ before it's too late. I'll be praying for you all!"

People acted in disgust and a few even spit and threw bottles and cups at Jason and Jamie, but they ignored their rude behavior completely.

Jason grabbed his jacket from the ground and walked off with Jamie. Carl and Edna followed them.

"Honey, that was awesome! What you said was great!" Jamie said; grabbing Jason from around the middle.

"A little scary but that's okay.......I think that's what we have to do though; stand up for the truth. Right Honey?"

"Right," Jamie replied.
