Sight and Sound

by PamFord Davis

Community Theater gives aspiring talent opportunities to work in the spotlight. In addition, local residents see top quality performances. I vividly recall seeing ‘The Miracle Worker’ while living in El Dorado, Arkansas. It was the story of Helen Keller.

You might recall that Patty Duke acted in the role of Helen in the movie classic. Patty won an Academy Award for best supporting actress. She was only 16 and the youngest (at that time) to receive the prestigious award in a competitive category.

Famed Helen Keller (1880-1960) had both eye sight and hearing at birth. Tragically she lost access to sight and sound as a result of illness at the age of 19 months.

A miraculous sight and sound experience left Saul (Apostle Paul) temporarily blind.

“… a light from heaven suddenly flashed around him. Falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’

‘Who are You, Lord?’ he said.

‘I am Jesus, the One you are persecuting,’ He replied. ‘But get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.’

The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the sound but seeing no one. Then Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing (Acts 9:3b-8a HCSB).”

Saul's sight was restored!

“Someone named Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good reputation with all the Jews residing there, came and stood by me and said, ‘Brother Saul, regain your sight.’ And in that very hour I looked up and saw him. Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of His voice (Acts 22:12-14 HCSB).”
