That Pesky Horse

by Dale Buchanan

“Let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus - - -.“  Hebrews 12:1b-2a

Growing up on a small farm in northern Wisconsin, I was delighted when my dad said we would keep a palomino mare for a family that lived in town.  I was used to having cows, pigs, chickens, rabbits, dogs, and cats.   But having a horse sounded like a lot of fun.

But that horse had two mean habits.  It loved to torment one particular cow. Chasing it back and forth from one end of the pasture to the other, the cow became frantic and jumped the fence. (This cow had never done that before.)  For some reason, the horse didn’t follow her. The only solution we found was to make sure they were never in the same pasture together.

I discovered the horse’s second mean habit when I was mounting her to ride.  She would nip me in the rear and at the same time try to kick me with her left rear hoof.  And her “nips” and kicks were anything but gentle.  I conquered her mean habit by quickly slapping her on the nose and hip and then speedily getting in the saddle.  I’m sure an experienced horse trainer would have come up with better solutions.

Christians sometimes have pesky sin habits (besetting sins) that seek to torment and overcome us.  It could be evil thoughts, foul language or unkind speech, addictions, temper, or maybe just plain meanness.  Or, it could be some good action (a distracting weight), but it turns our attention away from the Lord.  Whatever it might be, we are commanded in our text to lay it aside and conquer our sin.

It takes Holy Spirit empowered self-discipline and “looking unto Jesus.”  What is your “weight” or “besetting sin” that you need to conquer?  Decide today that you are going to win the battle.  Without making excuses, admit and surrender that problem to the Lord.  Ask for His help daily and continually, until you get the victory.
