Understanding The Awesome And Powerful Uses Of The Tongue

by Ngozi Nwoke

How well do you know your tongue? Many people don't understand the tongue and so readily fall into its trap. And when you underestimate the capability of the tongue, you will be highly hindered in your pursuit of peace and success.

For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God - James 3:2-6, 8-9 (NKJV).

Introduction

The tongue really is a little member of the body, yet it boasts great things and can set on fire the course of nature. Also, the tongue is such that if you don't stumble in words, you're a perfect person. And you will be able to bridle the whole body. Though very little, the tongue controls the rest of the body. So, understanding the tongue enables you to drive the rest of the body in the right direction.

Who Made The Mouth

God made the mouth and so made the tongue. And He has made the mouth as an instrument of creation. So that as creatures made in His image, we too can speak and see what we say as He did. And as many persons who will allow Him be with their mouths, He will teach what to say.

So the LORD said to him, "Who has made man's mouth? Or who makes the mute, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall say - Exodus 4:11-12 (NKJV).

Uses Of The Tongue

The tongue feeds the body, spirit, and soul. As such it's used for things other than tasting and eating physical food. So, another major use of the tongue is for speech, which feeds the spirit and the soul. Therefore, you need to consciously guard your speech so as to be blessed and not fall into its world of iniquity. Also, know that your words define your relationship with God and your future. This is because with your words you draw God to you and proclaim what you desire to see in the future.

Using Tongue As Speech

Life and death lie on your tongue. So, anytime you speak, you're speaking life or death to yourself or someone else, spirit, soul, or body. Therefore, guard what you say, for whatever you say determines whether you enjoy anything associated with life. This includes healing, total health, breakthroughs and success, and so on. Furthermore, it determines whether you suffer anything associated with death, like sickness and diseases, failures, and breakdowns.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit - Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV).

Again, with your tongue, you praise and converse with God. Surely, the beauty of your life is a function of your time with God. And your tongue plays a major role in your relationship and fellowship with God.

I cried to Him with my mouth, And He was extolled with my tongue. But certainly God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer - Psalms 66:17, 19 (NKJV).

Indeed, salvation is impossible without the tongue, for with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. As such, you are not saved until you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord. Also, you're saved from the oppressions of the devil as you declare your redemption in Christ Jesus.

That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation - Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV).

Polar Opposite Speech

Just like the tongue gives you polar opposite tastes, sweet and bitter taste, so also it speaks polar opposites. For example, with the tongue you speak peace and war, bless God and curse man. This is not acceptable before God, for you can't have polar opposites from the same source. However, what you say comes from the abundance of the heart, which is a result of what you feed on. Therefore, watch what you feed on and ensure that you speak only that which is acceptable before the Father.

Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh - James 3:10-12 (NKJV).

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks - Luke 6:45 (NKJV).

Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You - Psalms 119:11 (NKJV).

Conclusion

The tongue is a little member of your body but it is the gateway to your future and opening of polar opposites. However, you decide what it opens up for you. Therefore, guard what you say that you may create what you will love to see in your life and future.
