BIBLE STUDY ON SIN

by linzy bruno

On the Subject of Willful Sin--

"For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sin," (Hebrews 10:26)

"For whatsoever is not of faith is sin." (Romans 14:23b)

"watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit is indeed willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41)

For, although we could never cease in sin in our own strength, wisdom and might, the indwelling Spirit of God will do the enabling:

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." (2Corinthians 5:17)

Believers' Responsibility Regarding Sin--

Repentance: Acts 3:19, 1John 1:9 & 2Chronicles 7:14

AND readiness to help/advise, rather than instigate the sin of others

"We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves." (Romans 15:1)

"But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours becomes a stumblingblock to them that are weak." (1Corinthians 8:9)

Metaphors Depicting Sin--

Viper (poisonous)--Psalm 140:3 & Matthew 23:33)
Mule (stubbornness)--Joel 11:12
Bear (cruel)--Daniel 7:5
Cankerworm (destructive)--Joel 2:25
Wild Dog (unclean)--Proverbs 26:11
Fox (cunning)--Luke 13:32
Wolf (fierce)--John 10:12
Lion (devouring)--Psalm 22:13 & Daniel 7:4
Swine (filthy)--2Peter 2:22

Symbols Representing Sin--

Serpent--Genesis 3:1a, Matthew 23:33 & Revelation 12:9
Leprosy--Leviticus 13:44
Leaven--Matthew 16:6
A Woman--Zechariah 5:7-8 & Revelation 17:4-5
(Compiled by Emery Dancroft)

Consequences of Sin--

For Lucifer--Ezekiel 28:14-15 & Revelation 12:7-8

For Mankind--Upon the sin of Adam and Eve, there came upon man 2 terrible consequences--physical death and spiritual death. Death means separation. Genesis 2:9, 3:6-7, 5:5 & (Psalm 90:10)

The Second Death, which is spiritual and permanent--Matthew 7:23, 25:41, Revelation 2:11, 20:6, 14 & 21:8

For those living unsaved lives, God has cut them off from His Presence--

Ephesians 2:1-12.

Other Consequences--

Dulling Ears--Acts 28:27
Darkened Eyes--Ephesians 4:18
Diverting Feet--Isaiah 53:6
Defiling Tongue--Romans 3:13-14
A Deceptive Heart--Jeremiah 17:9
Detroys his mind/intellect--1Corinthians 2:14
Condemns his soul--Ezekiel 18:4

For Nature-- Romans 8:19-22

For God's Holy Angels--1Corinthians 4:9b, 1Timothy 5:21a, Galatians 3:19c, 1Peter 1:12d & Hebrews 1:14

All men were born into sin (Romans 3:23), but those who accept Christ as their personal Savior are forgiven if they keep with repentance as victory and power over sin is provided by God through His Gift of repentance:

"in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth," (2Timothy 2:25)

Those in Christ no longer make a practice of willful sin, as they are new creatures in Christ and His Nature abides in them, but it is possible to go against that new nature, thus, those who are in Him, must keep a watch over their lives.....

"Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance," (Matthew 3:8)

"Therefoe, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling;" (Philippians 2:12)

MOST POIGNANT QUOTE FROM REFERENCED SITE:

"It has been often observed that the Bible will keep one from sin, or sin will keep one from the Bible."

"Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God." (1John 3:4-9)

When we abide in Him, we are a new creature in Christ, and as long as we remain in Him, we will not make a practice of sin. Of course we will still make mistakes, as we cannot be perfect, and mistakes are considered sin, but this passage is clear that if we abide in Him, we will not willfully sin.

“To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne.”
